“Liam left pack territory.” Shaw sounded admiring. “He really will do anything for Amelia. It’s amazing.”

“It’s dangerous!” Stone exploded. He might try not to lose it with me, but Shaw didn’t get the benefit of what little restraint he had left. “Liam can’t protect Amelia. He’s got that whole weird vow he took to not harm anyone. He carried a fucking field mouse out of the house cupped in his hands the other day. He’s supposed to be a wolf!”

“He’s not any less a wolf because he’s different,” I said.

Stone gave me a look that made it clear I was stomping on his actual last nerve.

“We’ve got to find them both. But at least if Liam has found Amelia, we’ll be able to protect them both.” Stone’s voice was still disbelieving, as if he thought Liam’s visions were all made-up.

“Great, but how are you going to find them?” Shaw asked.

“I’m going to track him.”

“I wouldn’t try to run that far. Amelia could have covered quite a bit of distance already.”

“I’m not talking about tracking his scent.” Stone’s voice was clipped. “When I realized how unstable he was, I had Doc insert a tracker.”

“You put a tracker in your brother,” Shaw said disbelievingly.

“I was trying to take care of him,” Stone said defensively.

“Well don’t get any ideas about taking care of me,” Shaw shot back.

“What do you think I do every day of your life?” Stone demanded. “I know you take it for granted and you don’t give a damn, and everything’s just a big joke for you. But it’s not a joke for me. I can’t lose any of you.”

I caught myself rubbing my fingers absently over my arm, as if I was looking for a little metal tracker buried under my skin. But I wasn’t Stone’s brother. I never would be.

“So, are we going after Liam and Amelia, or Nathan?” Teresa asked patiently.

“Nathan.” Stone said without hesitation. “As much as I want to see Amelia safe… she’ll be safe once Nathan is put down. I don’t trust Liam’s visions, but we’re going to go make sure Nathan isn’t hiding somewhere in the Longroad pack like the cockroach he is.”

“Itrust his visions,” Shaw said.

“You’re just looking for a fight right now,” Stone said.

“I think someone is projecting,” Shaw said. “The only thing I want is to get Amelia back. But if she doesn’t want to be with us, then making sure she’s safe is the next best thing.” Then he added, considerably, “though I do really want to kill Nathan.”

“He’s mine,” Stone said.

“Oh, don’t be such a selfish dickhead. You already faced him once and you let him get away.”

Stone turned affronted eyes on his brother. His voice was icy when he said, “He threw himself off a cliff to get away from me.”

“You should have just shot him in the first place instead of feeling like you needed to dismantle him with your bare hands. It was selfish. You wanted Brennan’s death to hurt less, you wanted revenge, and--”

“Enough,” I interrupted, focusing my attention on Shaw so it wouldn’t look as if I were telling both of them to shut up.

But I was.

I loved Stone like a brother, and I would follow him anywhere. I knew how much he loved this pack. But he’d been an idiot when it came to Amelia, and it made me furious. I could never have her, and he could, and he’d fucked it up.

Even if I couldn’t have her, I wanted her near me. I wanted the possibility of coming across her and feeling my heart lift. I wanted to keep training her, so no one could ever hurt her again… and so I could listen to her teasing voice and lilting laughter. I wanted to run with her in the forest, our wolves free as we bounded between the pines.

“Let’s roll out.” Teresa sounded cheerful, even if the rest of us were at each other’s throats. “We can get a little murder done before sunrise and be back in time for brunch.”

Teresa hated to miss a meal.

We headed to the garage, where Stone stopped abruptly on the threshold. “Where the fuck is my car?”
