Shaw whistled. “I think you’ve even managed to piss off Cole, and he’s always the one who defends you when we say you’re being a dickhead.”

“Have you ever considered not making jokes about everything?” Teresa demanded.

“Not really. It’s part of my charm.” Shaw flashed a smile her way at the same time as he said, “Over your shoulder.”

Two more opponents raced through the woods toward us.

Teresa grabbed the arm of the man that reached for her and threw herself forward. She leveraged her weight to slam him over her body and into the ground. Then she drove her booted foot into his throat, choking him to keep him from calling out again. I drew my knife from my belt and made short work of him.

As I pulled loose the bloody knife, Shaw said, “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

I was pretty tired of all the King brothers at the moment.

The four of us reached the alpha’s house and skirted around it to the storm cellar. Stone counted us down, and when he hit one, Shaw and I pulled open the doors. Stone charged down the stairs, clearly ready for a fight, with Teresa hot on his heels.

He sounded disappointed when he called back “There’s no one here.”

“Do you want us to search the Longroad pack?” Teresa asked as they emerged back into the sunlight.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to see down there, where Liam had been held for all those years.

She added, “If we’re going to do that, we’re going to need backup.”

“Are you sure?” Shaw let go of the cellar doors, and they banged shut with a sense of finality. “Stone and Cole lost their girl, and they’re really bad at flirting, so this is the only way they have of expressing their love. I’m pretty sure they can kill their way through this whole pack. Be easier than having a fucking conversation with Amelia, right?”

I stared at Shaw in shock. “Are you really trying to get us to talk about ourfeelingsin the middle of enemy territory?”

Shaw shrugged. “It’s not like you’re going to talk about themanywhere. You haven’t even told Amelia how you feel.”

“Because I don’t feel anything.”

I could have sworn even Stone scoffed at that one.

“Have you thought about the weird attachment you guys have to her? And the bizarre attachment she has to you?” Teresa asked. “Do you think it’s because she lost her mate and you’re all alike? So she’s drawn to the brothers?”

That thought—that she was drawn to the King brothers and would never feel anything for me in the same way—stabbed into my chest.

“We’re all alike?” Shaw asked skeptically. “I definitely wouldn’t say that.”

“We don’t need to search. We can pick up Nathan’s scent here and track him. If anyone gets in our way, we’ll kill them.” Stone said.

“Typical for us, acting more like wolves than like human beings,” Shaw noted. Then he added thoughtfully, “Though that seems like a disservice to the wolves…”

Stone looked as if he wanted to beat his brother around the head and shoulders, but he ignored him.

We continued to search the trail, to track Nathan down. The trail led us back to the edge of their territory, and it was fresh. He had been taken away by car.

“Nathan left. He could be on his way to Amelia now.”

“How would he know where to find her?”

“I don’t know. But if he’s found a way, he’s got a head start on us.”

“Fuck.” Stone swore. “We need to get Amelia back to safety. Now.”
