"Itwasher property. I have it now, and possession is nine tenths of the law. If you're willing to defend it."

He raised a remote control in his hand. "And I'm quite willing to defend it."

"Get her out of here," Shaw warned Liam again.

Liam slammed into the door as Shaw dove for the knife. He threw his jacket over it and wrapped it up, snatching it out of midair.

Holmes pressed a button on his remote and a white flash went off, blindingly bright. A burnt-sugar scent filled the air. Was that what magic smelled like?

"He's got the place rigged with his own spells," I said. He must have learned some things from the witch.

The door cracked under Liam's force, and he kicked out the remaining glass. Then he offered me his hand "Come on."

Once I was running toward the wall, Liam turned back to help Shaw.

Shaw had knocked Holmes to the ground and snarling, leapt to savage his throat with his teeth. Holmes made a desperate movement, slamming his hand against Shaw’s side. The first time, nothing happened. The second, sparks of magic blasted from Holmes’ hand.

Shaw flew across the room and slammed into the wall.

"Come on!" I yelled at Shaw.

Liam leapt, transforming into his wolf, and slammed into Holmes. Then he and Liam both bounded back toward me.

We ran desperately for the wall.

A blast of yellow sparks singed past us, missing us all. The yard seemed to be growing longer and longer as if it was some sort of trickery on Holmes' part.

A surge of power behind us pressed the air out of my lungs. I turned back to see Holmes’ evil face. A wave of pure energy erupted from him, spreading across the grounds like a tsunami. I leapt for the wall and landed on top of it. Once Shaw was on the wall too, Liam leapt, bounding easily over the wall in a single jump.

Something hit me.

My body felt completely drained as I plummeted off the side and landed heavily in the alleyway. But I staggered on anyway for a few steps, before Shaw caught me up in his arms and carried me toward the car.

It wasn't until we were driving away I felt the sharp, intense pain in my side. I touched the pain, and my hand came away with blood warm against my fingertips.

"I'll be okay," I promised, because the look that had come over Shaw's face was dangerous, as if he was going to turn around to kill Holmes. We needed to get out of here and help Rose. "Let's just get to the witch. He'll know where we're going. Let's get the potion from her and get it to Rose before we can run into fresh trouble."

CHAPTER18

Wolf

I had watchedAmelia get hit by the blast that almost knocked her from the wall, had seen the pain flash across her face. I'd been watching those idiots steal, annoyed they were trying to ruin my ploy to keep Amelia here...and safe from the vampires.

Once Amelia fell, bleeding from her side, I'd started forward from the shadows. I’d barely managed to check myself as I watched those two fools gather her up. They would fumble their way out of here, at least.

She and the idiots had driven off. But they would have been pursued by Holmes.

If he had the chance to get out of his house.

I leapt easily over the wall and headed for the house.

The lights were still on, shards of glass scattered across the glass. I stepped carefully through the broken glass into the house. The bits of glass made the marble floors even slicker underfoot. A couch was upended onto its side, and it was still smoking. The room was chaos.

Holmes wasn’t here.

But even above the scent of burning, I could smell him.

I ascended the stairs carefully, cautious not to give away my presence until I knew what he was doing.
