He moved closer, his lips lightly brushing my forehead, and I felt a warmth spreading through me. I closed my eyes, allowing myself to fully feel the moment. We stayed like that for what felt like an eternity, and then I felt his lips move to my own.

We kissed slowly, passionately, and tenderly, as if we each wanted to savor every moment. Our kiss deepened, and I felt my body respond to his touch. His hands moved around my waist and I melted against him, my heart pounding in my chest.

“We need to get back on the road,” I murmured, even though the need to press myself to Shaw and keep kissing him was intense.

“You’re right,” he murmured between kisses, before the two of us finally pulled apart.

As we drove, I glanced back to make sure the others were still sleeping. His words about how I needed to talk to Stone bothered me. Shaw and Liam seemed so confident in their brother, but I had watched him tear people apart who betrayed him.

I couldn’t shake the feeling Stone would see me as a traitor.

I wasn’t sure it was safe there, and it definitely wasn’t safe out here. I felt trapped, even on the open road.

Shaw nodded. “Of course.”

After a while, I fell asleep with my head against the cool glass of the window. Shaw’s presence beside me was full of warmth and comfort.

But I still fell into dreams of Brennan.

CHAPTER21

Stone

I paced aroundour command center, because talking to Shaw always exasperated me.

“Stay on pack territory.” Shaw sounded exasperated as well. “We’re on our way.”

“Where’s Amelia?”

“She’s asleep next to me. We’ll be there soon.”

I could hear the sound of tires speeding over cement so I knew they weren’t in bed together, but still, the thought of Amelia asleep next to Shaw sent a spike of jealousy through me. When she was by his side, she felt safe and comfortable.

“She’s scared of you,” Shaw added.

The knife in my heart twisted.

“I did what I had to do,” I said, even though I didn’t believe that anymore.

Protecting Amelia should’ve come before anything else. Even the revenge I’d longed for all these years.

When I found out who had betrayed Brennan and Amelia, I might have to kill them quietly. For her sake. Because she obviously cared about whoever it had been.

But I couldn’t imagine a world where I let the person who tipped that first domino live. They didn’t deserve to watch the sun set when Brennan would never see it again.

“Yeah, and as long as you say stupid shit like that, she’ll never feel safe with you.”

“I can’t change that.” The way Amelia seemed to blaze with shared heat sometimes, and shrank away from me other times, was maddening. But it wasn’t her fault, and it wasn’t wholly mine, either. The past was always with us.

“Whatever you have to tell yourself,” Shaw said breezily, and I had to work to loosen my grip on the phone before I crushed it.

“Oh,I know you already are aware and have your own stupid plan, but she wanted to make sure you knew Joshua is a threat. He’s trying to distract you.” Shaw’s tone had turned dry. He knew damn well I was distracted.

“I’m aware.”

“But you keep him around anyway? Even after what he did to Amelia? Even knowing he’s going to make a play to take your place?”

I scoffed a laugh as I paced. “That will go poorly for him.”
