"Liam," I whispered, before kissing him. He lifted his head and pressed himself deeper inside me. My head fell back as I let my body take over and let my climax overtake me, whispering his name over and over again. I felt him moan as he found his own pleasure, and leaned forward to kiss me once more, lips moist and soft.

He held me against his chest, and I listened to his heart beat, my head resting on his shoulder, his fingers playing in my hair, his lips brushing against my forehead.

We lay like that for several minutes, not speaking. Words didn’t seem like enough.

“Today,” Liam said softly, “I’m right here.”

I knew what he meant, so I brushed my lips over his cheek and held him tight.

CHAPTER23

Wolf

I’d lostcontrol of the girl.

I’d been trying to isolate her, but the number of fucking shifters surrounding her just seemed to keep increasing. Now the kid was gone—that was good, I didn’t want the kid anywhere around if there had to be violence—but three male shifters circled her.

The vampires would have no problem killing them. But I didn’t want to do that to her.

Caroline and Adrianna came to visit me. The vampire queen rarely left the hive, so I knew how serious it was when she pressed her cold kiss against my cheek. “Wolf. You seem a bit too cozy hiding in the shadows.”

I wasn’t sure the vampires could talk about hiding in the shadows, but I wanted to win her over. Caroline’s fingers brushed against mine; she was close on my other side. I didn’t pull away, because I needed an ally at the moment.

“You need to bring that girl out, Wolf. You’ve never been afraid of bloodshed. But once they run back to pack territory…” Adrianna trailed off meaningfully. “I have the feeling you don’t want to lose her any more than we do.”

Caroline stiffened at my side.

“I’ve been all over their pack territory,” I reminded her. “That won’t mean she’s out of reach.”

“They’re more powerful together, wolf. Don’t underestimate them.”

“Don’t underestimate me,” I reminded her.

“I don’t.” Her gaze studied my face in a way that made me uncomfortable; I could feel it prickling on my skin as she tried to read me.

“You know, she’ll carry the babies, but I’ll think of them asours.”Caroline’s voice sounded tender, and Adrianna’s answering sigh under her breath was just a wisp. “I’m glad you’re the one who will be with her.”

That was never going to happen.

I hadn’t wanted to betray my friends, but Amelia wasn’t going to become breeding stock for their vampire hive.

“I’ll get her away from them,” I promised. “If you rip her away, she’ll never comply willingly.”

“I don’t need her to be willing/” Adrianna let out a small, dark laugh.

Rage twisted through my gut but I just nodded as if I didn’t care.

As far as the vampires were concerned, I was a monster like them now. As far as I was concerned, I was a monster now too.

But I’d behermonster, even if no one realized it yet.

Especially her.

“I think I see your chance coming,” Adrianna murmured.

A distinct reek reached my nose as a half dozen shifters–not the King pack–slunk through the parking lot. They tampered with the car but couldn’t get into the hood or the gas tank.

“Interesting that Amelia’s daily driver is a bulletproof SUV,” Adrianna muttered.
