“We’re not the only ones who value the girl highly. But that is Stone’s car. I’m willing to bet one of them stole it.”

I could feel her attention radiating on me. “You’ve learned a lot about them, watching them.”

I shrugged one shoulder.

“Do you think they’ll manage to take Amelia?”

“No,” I said. “I don’t think anyone can take her away from Shaw and Liam.”

Except for me.

CHAPTER24

Amelia

When we leftthe hotel the next morning, we all caught the lingering scent of wolves. It was such a familiar scent that once I couldn’t even smell it, because it was just… home. Now the scent of rain on a sunny day made me stiffen.

“Longroad pack,” I said urgently. I grabbed Rose’s hand to make sure she stayed with us, and she gave me a sidelong look like I was crazy. She might still be recovering, but her side-eye remained on point.

I was cursing myself for letting us stop, even though Rose was still dragging, obviously struggling.

We clambered into the car. Liam started for the driver’s side, and Shaw pushed him out of the way, thank God, we couldn’t have any grandma driving at the moment. Aiden and Rose clambered into the backseat. My brother looked pale, reminding me just how bad it would be if our pack caught him. Was Nathan back to being their alpha?

I breathed a sigh of relief as we pulled onto the highway, until Shaw’s eyes rose to the rearview. “Looks like we have a tail,” he said calmly.

The sound of the engine was a roar as we shot down the highway, the SUV vibrating beneath us. Shaw managed to stay ahead of them. He drove with a skill that was impressive and a bit frightening. His foot was on the accelerator, pushing the car to its limits as he swerved in and out of the traffic.

Shaw’s eyes darted to check if our pursuers had closed the gap. They hadn't, and he pushed the car even faster. We flew past cars and trucks, barely giving them enough time to get out of the way. Horns honked furiously as we sped by, but Shaw only drove faster. I held on tight, not wanting to be thrown around the car.

We swerved around an eighteen wheeler, the car's tires squealing as gravity pressed me into the seat. I twisted, clinging to the seat, searching for any sign of Nathan. Rose’s frightened gaze met mine, and I reached out to squeeze her knee comfortingly.

Maybe we had finally outrun them.

Then a car rocketed toward us, rushing in from the exit. They’d tried to get around to get ahead of us.

Shaw punched the accelerator, pushing the car even harder. We swerved between cars, then finally Shaw cut the wheel and brought us onto the breakdown lane. We raced up it.

The Longroad pack was relentless. Horns sounded and metal shrieked as they clipped a car, forcing it into the path of a truck. I watched helplessly in glimpses in the rearview as traffic crumpled behind us.

“I hope they’re alright,” I said.

“I hopewe’realright,” Aiden said grimly.

Shaw weaved in and out of the traffic, trying to find some way to shake them off, but with the accident behind us blocking traffic, suddenly it was just us, the Longroad pack, and oncoming traffic. They slammed into us with a crunch, and we lurched forward. Shaw swore and swerved away; he was already standing on the accelerator.

“This is why I stole the armored car,” Liam said.

“Did you know this was going to happen? Did you have a vision?” I asked.

“Because that would have been pretty fucking pertinent to share,” Shaw added.

Liam shook his head.

“Do you have weapons in the car?” Aiden asked. “There’s so many of them… we may have to fight our way out.”

“Of course we have weapons,” Shaw scoffed, at the same time as Liam said, “There has to be a way out. There’s always a way out.”

Shaw didn’t dare look away from the road. “Yeah, Liam. It’s calledviolence.”
