Dead.

I had killed them all.

I bent over and heaved as I threw up beside one of the cars.

When I was finished, I looked up to see Amelia running toward me. Amelia looked as if she wanted to hug me, but I raised a bloody hand, warning her off.

Shaw and Aiden looked grim as they stepped over the shifters and came to where I was.

"Are you okay?" Shaw asked. He was moving slowly, obviously wounded.

I nodded. "But I won't be if we don't get moving."

"I brought you some clothes," Aiden handed them to me. I didn't even have time to be self-conscious about the fact that I was naked in front of them.

I quickly put on my clothes, trying to ignore the scent of blood that clung to them.

Amelia's eyes were full of horror as she looked around. "They're all dead."

Her gaze turned up to mine. "How?"

My throat choked. I couldn't read her gaze to know if she was afraid of me or not.

"I'm a monster," I said. "I don't know how or why. But I know what I am."

CHAPTER26

Amelia

No matterwhat I told Liam, I couldn't convince him he had done the right thing. He was still splattered in blood and he looked shell shocked as if he'd lost a fight. I still couldn't believe what he'd done.

“Because of you, we’re alive.” I glanced at Rose, who sat on the other side of the car. It was so awkward having this conversation with Shaw, Aiden and Rose listening in.

Liam rocked in his seat, once, before he stilled as if that particular tic had been beaten out of him long ago. “Because of me, they're all dead.”

“Because of you I’mfree. You did what you had to, Liam.” My voice softened, even though it wasn’t as if I could have any privacy in this car no matter how quietly I spoke. “You know what they would have done to me. They would have given me back to Nathan.”

Liam turned to me with heat flaring in his eyes. “I would never let that happen. But I should have found another way.”

He closed his eyes, and it looked as if despair settled into every bone of his body. “I can see inside the last vestiges of their minds. Do you know that our consciousness lives on for a few moments after our body dies? And I can feel them... I can feel them.”

I grabbed his hand. “So you don't have to feel it alone. Talk to me, Liam. Let me help you.”

“I don't deserve you.”

I stared at this man who was so powerful and so broken at the same time. “Say that again, and I'm going to slap you.”

Everyone in the car was suddenly focused on me, especially Liam, who looked shocked. Feeling slightly uncomfortable, I added, “I haven't taken a vow of nonviolence. And that's nonsense, Liam! You can be sad about what you had to do, but I'm not going to listen to you say that you don't deserve me because you protected me.”

“She has a point,” Shaw said. He ducked his head but didn't manage to hide his smile. “And I'm not just saying that because I don't want her to slap me.”

I glared at Shaw. He didn't seem impressed.

When we finally reached King territory, I had complicated feelings as we drove up those green hills. There was a knot of dread in my body but also a sense of relief. I knew that I was physically safe. After everything my men had said, I knew that Stone wouldn't kill me as a traitor.

As soon as the car came to a stop, Liam was off like a shot. His clothes burst from his leanly muscled body as he transformed, then he was running as a wolf. I stared after him and then asked Shaw, “Do you have any ideas how we could have handled that better?”

“Oh, I think that went about as well as it could. He has his shit to deal with. That's not going to change overnight.”
