Amelia

After dinner,Stone started to gather the dinner dishes, and I joined him. Karissa led Rose and Aiden off on a tour of the house. Stone glanced at me as I began to stack the dishes on my end.

Even when we were clearing plates, the air between us felt charged with electricity.

“When did Rose and Teresa talk?” I asked. I’d been replaying that conversation, and Rose hadn’t seemed surprised or scared. She’d already known she was going to train with the cubs.

“Rose came to see us earlier today,” Stone said.

My fingers slipped, and the stack of plates thumped against the walnut table. “She did what?”

My heart was suddenly beating frantically. What was Rose thinking?

The thought of my little sister confessing to Stone made my throat close up with panic. She must want to protect Aiden. That must be why Stone had welcomed Aiden to the family…

“Relax.” Stone took a few steps until he was beside me. He towered over me, as always, tall and commanding, and I couldn’t tell if it was comforting or terrifying. “Amelia. She’s fine.”

He sounded tense, but then he said more lightly, “Teresa likes her.”

“It seems Teresa likes everyone but me.”

“She’ll come around.”

“Will she?”

“You’re very likeable.”

I let out a laugh, and Stone frowned down at me.

“You are,” he said. “I’m the one who no one likes.”

“The pack worships you,” I reminded him. “Except for a handful of people…”

I’d thought Stone was too much of a killer. But maybe he could stand to do a little more killing.

“Joshua…” I began.

“He’s no threat to you.”

“Maybe. He’s definitely a threat toyou.”

Shaw scoffed, and furious flashed through me like a flame. He was too damned arrogant. The sudden flare of protectiveness I felt for him surprised me.

“What are you thinking?” I demanded. “You shouldn’t leave enemies behind.”

“I have a plan, Amelia.”

“Care to let me in on it?”

He shook his head. “I’d prefer it be a fun surprise.”

“I don’t think offunwhen I think of surprises, Stone.”

“Well, perhaps you need more fun surprises, then.” His eyes, so often icy, softened as he looked down at me.

It might've been a nice moment if I’d been able to loosen anxiety’s squeezing grip. “When I ran away… I know Joshua is talking about how I left. What if it makes you look weak as alpha…”

Stone shook his head. “I want to know who else is on Joshua’s side. I’m going to root out this evil in my pack once and for all. But even if I move in my own time, you will be protected, Amelia.”
