Was he afraid he’d always only be my bodyguard?

Was he sick of taking care of me?

I wanted to talk to him, but I was so worried about Liam. “I have to find Liam. What he did… what he went through…” I shook my head. I didn’t want to talk about the carnage Liam had unleashed, because I knew he was ashamed. He’d want to forget it.

But I was a shifter, and the memory of him, moving so flawlessly and quickly, with deadly power, as the bodies piled up around him… I’d be lying if I said it didn’t turn me on. He could be the alpha of this pack. He could be a god among shifters. And he carried that power so lightly, without valuing it at all.

“I’ll fade into the forest,” Cole promised me. “But I need to make sure you’re safe.”

“Didn’t you spend all day watching over my son?”

He nodded, his handsome face serious. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, Amelia. I want to take care of him.”

His dark eyes were intense. He meant every word. Even as he added softly, “And you.”

I wanted to tell him I felt safe with him. But for me, that felt like too much to say.

I hadn’t felt safe with anyone since Brennan, until I came to the King pack.

“Thank you,” I said, just as softly.

Disappointment flickered across his face, just for a second, before he nodded. “I’ll be here if you need me.”

“I know.”

The moment hung between us, so warm and tantalizing that I wanted to stay in it for longer. I hesitated, then turned away and walked into the woods.

I didn’t look back as I threaded my way through the pines, but I knew Cole was watching over me.

CHAPTER30

Amelia

I couldn’t findLiam in the forest.

“He doesn’t want to be found.” Stone emerged from the shadows behind me, making me jump.

“Are you stalking me?” I demanded.

He frowned at me. “I’m alpha. This is all my land.”

“I remember you’re alpha, don’t worry. You don’t need to remind me.” It was one of the many things that made Stone so difficult. “And you can still be stalking me.”

Stone exhaled. “I wanted to talk to Liam too.”

He looked less certain than usual, as he crossed his powerful arms over his chest, and it made some of my tension soften.

“Don’t lecture him,” I warned. Stone would want Liam to use his powers for the good of the pack. I was sure that was why Liam had kept them secret. “They’re his powers. He can use them how he wants.”

“I’m not going to lecture him.”

“So what are you coming out here for? Did you want advice?” I took a step closer to Stone, close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body. Stone had seemed softer in the kitchen than usual today. Maybe he was trying to figure a way to make things right.

I couldn’t imagine feeling safe around Stone right now.

But he made me feel other things. Anger. Want. Desire. Even now, as he gazed down at me, heat pooled between my thighs.

“I don’t need advice.”
