Wolf

The scentof her clung to me. All I wanted to do was race back through the forest and rip his throat out.

I didn’t need to see him to know he was moving through the wreckage of the place where I had camped. He was taking that too and making it his. He would take everything if he could.

Mine. She was mine.

I was too hungry. It was making me irrational.

I had to get home. Had to feed.

Otherwise, I was afraid that when I took her from them… I would hurt her as much as I hurt them.

CHAPTER34

Amelia

The next morning,I woke up feeling as if I’d barely slept, even though light streamed in through the windows. The bed was empty, the blankets on Dylan’s side crumpled and the sheet cold. Panic clutched my chest and I jolted awake, the haze of sleep left behind even though my eyes burned.

“Dylan?” I stepped into the hall, keenly aware that I needed a shower. The scent of King pack clung to me, woodsmoke and apples, so strong that I couldn’t even find a trace of my own scent on my skin. I’d been exhausted when I stumbled back into my own bed, and I’d been afraid of sleepwalking again.

“He’s right here,” Cole called, stepping to the foot of the stairs.

I frowned down at him. Why hadn’t he kept me from sleepwalking last night? He’d been still asleep—in wolf form--in front of my door when Stone returned me to my room, and he’d leapt to his feet as soon as we neared the door. Stone had grunted something about discussing it in the morning that had sounded vaguely threatening, but everything Stone said tended to sound vaguely threatening.

“Thank you,” I said, though I headed down the stairs toward him. I needed to see Dylan before my heart could return to its regular pace.

Cole regarded me uncertainly. “What happened last night?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you go over the balcony?” He sounded hurt, and then I realized he must think I’d evaded him on purpose.

“I don’t know. I was sleepwalking. I don’t understand it either. But I don’t think I could’ve…” I tried to imagine myself leaping over the balcony and landing lightly on my feet.

Cole clearly had more he wanted to say. But before he could, Dylan ran into view.

I exhaled in relief, even as Dylan just grabbed Cole’s wrist and begged, “Come on! You’re missing all the best parts of the movie!”

Cole looked tired. He probably wasn’t getting the best sleep when he felt so responsible for us both, and my heart softened. “Dylan. Let Cole get some rest, all right?”

“It’s okay.” Cole smiled at Dylan, his eyes crinkling at the corners. That smile that wasn’t directed at me still made my heart flip-flop. “I don’t want to miss the rest ofAladdin. Who knows how it ends?”

“Fairy tales always have happy endings,” I reminded him.

Cole looked at me over his shoulder as Dylan dragged him away. “Not just fairy tales, Amelia.”

I followed them into the living room. Karissa was curled up on the couch drinking a cup of coffee and paging through a magazine, and she smiled when she saw me. “Hey! Want a cup?”

“I’ll get one in a minute.” I didn’t want Karissa to feel like she always had to feed and water me, sweet as it was. I sank into the other side of the soft sectional. “Sit and relax for once.”

Karissa rolled her eyes as she let her feet slip to the floor. She was wearing fuzzy pink socks. “Sitting doesn’t exactly relax me. There’s always something that needs to be done around here to keep these yahoos alive and halfway well. I’ll get you a cup.”

But before she could, Liam walked into the room.

“Good morning.” His voice was deep, and he was tall and broad-shouldered, filling up the doorway, as always. But he was neatly dressed in a blue button-down shirt and jeans that fit him well, and he was clean-shaven. For a second, I couldn’t quite reconcile him with the Liam who had run from me last night.
