We could lie to each other with our words–or with our silence–but the scent between us gave us away. Wolves communicated with scents, marking each other's bodies. My scent and his mingled on my skin, and I wanted more of him. I let my fingers glide over his skin, tracing the shape of his bicep. I was finally close enough to study his tattoos, but I could barely think straight.

Cole's fingers curled around my wrist, pulling my hand away from his arm. "Amelia," he said again, his voice strained.

I looked up at him, my heart pounding in my chest. I could see the desire in his eyes, the same longing that I felt burning within me. I licked my lips but I didn't know what to say.

Words always failed between Cole and me. We were both too careful.

Without warning, he captured my lips. The kiss was hot and fierce, our teeth clashing together as we battled for dominance. I moaned as his tongue swept into my mouth, consuming me.

I shifted closer to him, my body pressing against his as we kissed. His hands roamed over my skin, caressing my my hips, my ass, my thighs. I felt like I was on fire, my blood racing through my veins.

Fireworks exploded behind my eyelids as his tongue plunged into my mouth, exploring every inch. I moaned into his mouth, my fingers tangling in his hair.

Finally, breathless, we broke apart. Cole's eyes were dark with desire as he looked at me. "Fuck, Amelia," he said, his voice rough. "I can't think when you touch me."

"I know." The ache inside me was unbearable. "I feel the same."

I rolled gently on top of him and kissed him again. I could taste the salt of his sweat and the sweetness of his breath. I wanted him so badly it hurt.

Cole growled and flipped me over, pinning me beneath him. He kissed my neck then moved further down, kissing my collarbone. I shuddered beneath him, my hands stroking over the flexing muscles of his back and shoulders. I couldn't move, but I didn't want to. I was content to let him pin me.

He moved lower, his lips tracing a line down my chest, sucking on my breasts through my shirt. I gasped and arched my back, feeling the heat of his mouth on my skin. Every touch made my core tighten, every kiss left me wanting more.

Cole moved lower still, his lips brushing over my skin where my tank had ridden up from my leggings. The feel of his mouth against my skin made me groan.

But he stopped, pulling away from me. His eyes were dark with desire, his breathing ragged. "We can't do this," he said hoarsely. "Not... yet."

"Not here?" I asked, slowly coming back to earth. We were lying in the shadow of the trees near the big house, where anyone could see us.

Cole shook his head. He rose to his feet, then offered me his hand up. Just my palm against his felt electric to me as he pulled me up to my feet.

"We need to understand what's happening," he said. "With the ..." he trailed off. Typical Cole, unable–or unwilling–to use his words. He pushed aside my collar, and his thumb gently traced the shape of the mate mark.

"I don't need to understand that to understand what's between us," I said softly.

It was a major confession from me, words that felt wrenched from my chest.

He shook his head. It felt like an ache in my chest, like being rejected.

"I think we do have to understand," he said. "I don't know that you and I have any claim on each other... I think maybe you belong with the King brothers."

"That doesn't mean I don't belong with you."

"We'll see," he said. "I'm going to spend the morning in the library trying to find something about this."

My lips felt bee-stung and my core ached with need as the two of us trudged toward the house.

I agreed with him that we needed answers.

But I did not feel--for the first time in my life--like a trip to the library.

CHAPTER36

Amelia

I followedCole into the pack’s command center and into the library. It was silent in here; we were alone. There were papers spread across the tables, and Cole hurriedly gathered them up.

Though not before I glimpsed that the map trackedmywhereabouts. There were other papers about Nathan, about the Longroads, about the Weston pack. Cole swept everything into folders and stacked them on the table at the end of the room.
