“We don’t have any books about the science behind mating,” Cole said. “That would be too easy. But we can look at the pack records.”

“What if this has nothing to do with your pack and everything to do with me being part of the Longroad pack?”

“Does the Longroad pack have a library?”

“No. There might be something in the alpha’s house…” I trailed off. I didn’t want to go back onto Longroad territory, and I definitely didn’t want these men to go there.

Nathan had taken Brennan from me. My biggest nightmare all these years had been that he would take Dylan from me, and now I was afraid he would take another of my men.

“We’ll figure it out,” Cole said confidently, carrying over a stack of leather-bound books. He took one and passed it over to me.

The two of us flipped through the pages in companionable silence. I felt comfortable with Cole… but then the door opened, and I tensed.

Stone’s deep voice seemed to rumble right through my body. I squeezed my knees together as I straightened my spine, trying to focus on the page in front of me. No matter how much I tried to force myself to relax, it seemed I had forgotten how to sit normally.

Cole’s gaze flickered up to me. I met his eyes, and a charged moment passed between us.

“I need Shaw to go out there,” Stone was saying as he entered the library. “Get him for me so I can give him the brief.”

“I should go,” Teresa said. “Shaw looks too much like a King brother. I can blend in. You guys don’t blend.”

“I’m not sending you.” Stone stopped, and even though my back was to him, I could feel his gaze. His presence was like warmth sliding up my spine, like a caressing hand. “What are you two doing here?”

“Some research,” Cole answered. “Amelia and I are trying to understand her… mating bond.”

I winced in embarrassment. There was something so wild and uncontrollable about the way I felt for these men. I hated to discuss it so openly.

“I see.” Stone hesitated. “Carry on.”

He was so maddening.Carry on.Thanks, Stone, I desperately needed your approval.

I tried to focus on the page once again.

“Tee. Don’t make me ask twice.” Stone’s voice carried a warning note, and even though he wasn’t orderingmearound, my thighs still clenched.

I had complicated feelings about the authority with which Stone spoke, that alpha power in his voice. Sometimes it scared me. Sometimes it made me want to punch him in the face. Sometimes… I worried my lower lip between my teeth, trying to conquer the rogue feelings of desire.

“I’m going,” she said.

The door swung shut. Stone went to the table on the far side of the room where his files were, then carried them over to the long table on the other side. I wished I wasn’t so keenly aware of his every movement.

After a while, my eyes ran across something that seemed really important. “Cole. Listen to this.”

“What is it?”

“This story’s about another pack. I don’t even know if it’s true, but it seems like it’s about one woman having two mates.”

“Read it to me,” Cole suggested.

Teresa and Shaw came in. Shaw glanced toward me, gave me a friendly nod, but didn’t say anything. I hated how awkwardly we had left things.

Shaw headed for Stone. “What?”

“You might want to try that again.” Stone’s chair creaked as if he were leaning back in it. “We’re not in the house.”

Shaw scoffed, looking around the library. “We’re all family, or might as well be, in this room.”

Stone dropped it. “I have a mission for you.”
