“Please tell me you didn’t follow her out of the grocery store.”

“No, I didn’t want to scare her. I just wanted to get to know her, maybe fuck her if she was willing,” he said, leaning his head back against the lawn chair, remembering how she’d reacted when he told her he wanted to drink beer from between her thighs.

The thought of pouring cold brew over her and slowly lapping it up made him sigh.

They sat there staring at the flames, drinking, and eating their cold burgers.

“Do you ever think about getting married? Settling down?” Preston asked. “I’d like a wife and family.”

Colby sighed. Preston knew some of his story, but there was so much he kept buried inside that he didn’t want anyone to know about. Looking back, he shouldn’t have stolen that car but still ran as fast as he could.

What did he have to offer a woman? With his upbringing, there were no guarantees that he would be a good father. He’d never had a good example, and his mother…It was a wonder he even thought about women.

“Nope,” he said, coming to the conclusion. Marriage and families didn’t go with men like him.

And he would never subject any child to striped legs and bruises like he’d endured. How his teachers could live with themselves he didn’t know, but no one had come to his rescue. No one. Not until he met the Parkers.

Maybe his reaction to this woman was because of all the uncertainty in his life since the Parkers abandoned him. After what he’d lived through and endured, he liked his life to just hum along. Living out here was quiet and there were few people and no problems.

A woman would definitely screw that up.

Just then the sound of a car turning down the lane had them rising from their chairs and glancing down the dirt lane that led to the house to see who was coming to visit. If it was that Jim White again, there would be trouble.

The color of the car was the first thing Colby saw.

“What the hell?” he said.

Staring at the rental car, his insides began to shake. “Oh no. No.”

“What?” Preston asked.

“I recognize that car,” he said. “You don’t think she’s the new owner do you?”

Just then the car pulled to a stop and the gorgeous dark-haired beauty stepped out of the vehicle.

Preston gasped and said in a low voice. “Dear God. No wonder you’re horny.”

“Hello,” she called. “I’m looking for Will and Lillian Parker’s home. Is this it?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Preston called out. “You’re at the right place.”

They both stepped toward the light where she could see them.

Suddenly she gasped and he knew she’d recognized him.

“You,” she said.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said politely, taking his cowboy hat off. “Colby King. I’m one of the ranch hands here.”

“Preston Nash,” his friend said, stepping up and shaking her hand. “Welcome to the Sweet B Ranch.”

“Dear God,” she said, glaring at Colby. For the first time in years, he was afraid he was about to be fired.

CHAPTER4

It was that handsome jerk from the grocery store. Never before had she been so openly accosted and yet, the sight of those big, burly arms was tantalizing. The tattoo on one arm and the curl of his thick lips had left her imagining things she’d never thought of. But she didn’t know the man, and now here he was standing in front of her with a beer and his hat in hand.

The beer he’d wanted to trickle down her body and taste her. The thought had conjured up all kinds of images that left her body warm, but he was a complete stranger. A man who looked dangerous and foreboding.
