My eyes widen when he moves to stand right in front of me. “Um, hi Ash,” I say as he just stares into my eyes. His mouth purses as if he’s sucking on a lemon. King grunts, snapping him out of his thoughts, and he sighs.

“I’d like it if we could be friends,” he grumbles, and I suck in a breath, my chest tightening, and my heart aching. This is a good thing. So why do I feel like crying? I hold in my emotions and nod.

“That would be nice,” I mutter, and he takes a step away from me as if just now realizing how close we were to each other.

King moves closer to me and squeezes my hand. I turn my head to look at him, and he’s smiling. The people in the hall don’t know what is going on, and Bianca looks like she’s about to flay me alive.

“We better get to the gym for the pep rally,” Ash grumbles and then yawns. I agree, and we all head in that direction. The guys split off from me to stand with their team while I move over to my coach. She gives me a big smile and places her hand on her heart.

“You look adorable, Gracie. I hope soon we can get you back into formation,” I give her a shaky smile, and she points to the bleachers where she wants me to sit.

Students fill the rest of the seats, and soon after, the principal is giving a quick speech. I’m not really paying attention. My mind is racing about Ash wanting to be friends. What made him change his mind? Just a few days ago, he told me to stay away from him.

Music starts up, and I watch as the BITCHES get into formation. Bianca’s in the front because she needs to be the center of attention. Tinsley and India are behind her on the side. They do a small cheer and wave their pom poms, getting the crowd hyped up.

I even clap along with them, getting into the spirit until Bianca finds me in the crowd and gives me a nasty smirk. Oh no, what now?

Bianca moves back a few feet and grabs a sign. India and Cheyenne do the same. I almost miss what they say until they start to cheer.

“Oh, poor little Grace.”

Clap Clap

“With her memories misplaced.”

Clap Clap

“She’s such a disgrace.”

Clap Clap

“And needs to learn her place.”

Clap Clap

“Should have stayed dead.”

Clap Clap

“Now she’s messed in the head.”

I don’t hear the rest of the cheer because Ash storms up to Bianca, and they start fighting. Tears run down my face, and I try to avoid all my classmates laughing and taking videos.

My coach runs over and shuts the music off, then grabs India and Cheyenne by the arm and leads them out of the gym. I’m shaking, and my vision is starting to blur. I need to get out of here. Someone comes up beside me, and their shadow blocks out the horrible fluorescent lighting.

“Don’t let them win, Doll,” Ash says as he offers me his hand.

“Why not? They’ll never stop trying to destroy me,” I mutter and take his hand. He scoffs and looks over to where the other guys are yelling and screaming at Bianca. Her face is red, and she’s trying to make herself cry, but I can see she’s loving the attention.

“You’re not alone anymore, Gracie. You have us,” Ash says quietly, and I look back at him. He seems confused, then pulls me to my feet and wraps me in his arms. I’m frozen at first, but then I melt.

ChapterTwenty-Five

Iskip the game, and the guys understand. I know King wanted me there, but after the pep rally, I just needed a break. I was happy to find that my mom wasn’t home and Gray was on a date with Anna. I hope they can fix whatever’s broken.

My niece deserves a happy family.

I’m in the kitchen frosting chocolate cupcakes with cookie dough icing when someone knocks. I laugh and shake my head. The game ended about twenty minutes ago. I told the guys to go out and celebrate their win, but I guess they didn’t listen.
