“I’m buying my wedding dress,” I said, and Sephie gaped at me. “He already knew,” I explained and she pretended to be offended for a second.

“Did Luna make it?” he asked, his deep tenor curling around her name.

“I did,” Luna answered him, nothing but snark in her tone.

“Well then I know it’s perfect,” he said, grinning dramatically at Luna. “Because she would nevereverlet anything hang in her shop that she didn’t spend hours working on, even foregoing events she promised to go to—”

“Enough,” she laughed, rolling her eyes at him. “And before you ask again, the answer isno,” she continued.

“You’re going to change your mind,” Brad said, his blue-gray eyes scanning her face with a sort of determination I’d never seen from him.

“What are you doing, Brad?” I asked as I gave Luna my bank card. “Proposing to Luna to get a discount on custom suits?” I joked.

“Ha,” Luna laughed, handing me back my card. “I charge him extra.”

Sephie and I chuckled at that.

“No,” she continued. “Bradly dearest is trying to rope me into a scheme of epic proportions and I’m simply not here for it.”

He smirked, sliding his hands into his pants pockets. “Come on,” he said. “It’ll be fun, Luna. Just like old times.”

“Never. Going. To happen.” She handed me my dress, but I didn’t budge an inch. Neither did Sephie. We were invested now. “Plus, I’m pretty sure my boyfriend wouldn’t be into the idea.”

“Like I’ve ever cared what he thinks,” Brad said, a muscle in his jaw flexing before he smoothed the look with his normal, charming smile. “You’ll change your mind,” he said. “You always do.” He turned to me, pointing to the garment bag in my hand. “That’s going to look beautiful on you, Anne,” he said before he winked at Luna. “Take care.”

He headed out the door, and I stared after him for a few moments before turning back to Luna.

“He’s ridiculous,” Luna said, waving toward the door. “He always drags me into the most ludicrous situations.”

Sephie and I looked at her expectantly. “And?”

“And,” Luna said, chuckling. “This time I’m putting my foot down. There is no way I’m pretending to be his fiancée on a business retreat for some company he’s trying to buy just so he can be included in all the couple stuff with the owners.” She shrugged. “A girl has to draw the line somewhere.”

“Wow,” I said, pursing my lips. “I had no idea Brad was so…”

“Into role playing?” Luna offered, and we all laughed at that. “He has a good heart,” she continued, a kind of wistful look in her blue eyes. “But sometimes he doesn’t think about how other people have boyfriends, lives to live, shops to run, and dresses to make.” She nodded toward the dress.

“Happily ever afters to facilitate,” Sephie added, and Luna smiled at that.

“I do what I can,” she said. “I’d love to see a picture of you in it after the event.”

“You got it,” I said, my phone buzzing to remind me to take my meds. I left my water in the car, so we had to book it. “Thank you again! And good luck with Brad!” I called as we headed out.

“I don’t need luck,” she called back. “It’s not happening!”

We laughed as the door closed behind us, and I got into Sephie’s car, hurrying to take my pill on time. I’d been really good about it ever since I had the incident last month.

Jim:Did you take your meds, baby?

Me:Yes, dear.

Jim:Good girl.

“Wow,” Sephie said, turning onto the road.

“What?”

“You’re looking at your phone like you want to devour it,” she teased. “Whatever he said, I don’t want to know.”
