“I got out of the shower, and you were gone,” he explained.

Gosh, he was not happy. I’d never seen him looking so distressed, and I hated knowing that I’d caused it. “I just wanted to come and talk to Hanna for a few minutes,” I said.

Shooting me an incredulous look, he asked, “Do you think next time you could let me know?”

He was worried about me. Something about that made my heart melt, so I promised, “I can do that next time.”

Kane dipped his chin. “Good.” With that settled, his eyes slid to the side, and he jerked his chin up. “Hey, Leo. Thanks for coming out here.”

Leo? Kane knew this guy?

“No problem, man. You want to do this here?” Leo returned.

Kane shook his head. “Let’s go back to the house,” he said before shifting his attention to me. “Are you done here?”

I nodded. “Yes, but what’s going on?”

Kane held out his hand toward the man and said, “This is Leo. He works with me at Harper Security. Leo, this is Ellery.”

Leo smiled at me. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Likewise,” I returned. Then, because I didn’t want to be rude, I said, “This is Hanna. She owns the place.”

Leo’s gaze shifted to Hanna. Something soft stole over his face before he said, “Nice to meet you, Hanna. It’s a cool place you’ve got here.”

She looked about ready to freak out, and I had a feeling I knew why. She hadn’t taken her eyes off Leo since he walked through the door. “Thanks,” she rasped.

Without her having acknowledged him, Kane stepped forward and forced Hanna’s eyes away from Leo. Then, he shared, “I’m going to be staying here with Ellery for the foreseeable future. If there’s any additional cost for that, please let me know.”

“It’s all good,” Hanna assured him. “I’ve already told Ellery she has nothing to worry about.”

“Perfect. If that changes, you’ll let me know?”

Hanna nodded.

With that, Kane looked in my direction and asked, “Are you ready? Leo’s got some information to share with us.”

I didn’t know what information Leo would have to share with us, but I had a feeling it had something to do with Patrick, so I answered, “Yeah.”

Kane jerked his head toward the front door and moved in that direction. Leo followed. I looked back at Hanna and whispered, “I’ll talk to you later.”

She gave me a sympathetic look and nodded again. “Yes, definitely. I’ve got an idea about your parents I wanted to talk to you about.”

My parents.

Wow.

Obviously, I didn’t know what she was going to say or what her idea was, but the fact that she’d seen me yesterday morning when I watched them on the television and then she spent time thinking of how she could help warmed my heart.

So, I gave her a nod of confirmation.

Then, I scurried across the room to catch up with Kane.

THIRTEEN

Ellery

Where there was something about having Kane around me that made it almost impossible to feel fearful of anything, it seemed there was at least one instance where it was possible.
