We’d just gotten back to the tiny home where Kane and I were staying, and now that Leo had joined us, I had to admit I was feeling a bit nervous about what he was doing here. Kane hadn’t indicated that anybody would be stopping over, but considering he was here now, I had a feeling that Leo must have known something about my situation with Patrick.

When nobody made any move to speak, and I couldn’t take the silence any longer, I asked, “What’s going on?”

Kane didn’t hesitate to answer. “After Jake knocked on the conference room door yesterday and told me about you being all over the news, I immediately told him to have Leo get started on searching for whatever he could find on Patrick. Leo is one of our private investigators at Harper Security Ops, and he’s absolutely brilliant at what he does.”

So far, this all sounded good. Kane wanted to take action quickly, and I appreciated the fact that he didn’t wait to speak to me before making any moves. I wanted to read into the fact that he’d done it so quickly and believe it had something to do with the way he might have felt about me, but I wasn’t a fool.

That would have been unrealistic.

The truth was, Kane was a man of action, and this was just another testament to the kind of guy he was.

And right now, even allowing my thoughts to drift there was ridiculous. There was no question that there was an overwhelming sense of dread in the room, and most of that had been coming from me. How could thoughts and dreams of how I hoped things would or could be with Kane even begin to befuddle my sense of doom?

My eyes slid away from Kane and shifted in Leo’s direction. “Did you find something that is concerning to you?”

“I found several things, but I guess the thing I’m most interested in is what you can tell me about Ivan Moreno,” Leo said.

“I’m sorry. Who?” I returned.

Leo opened up a folder, pulled out a photo, and held it out to me. “This guy. Do you know him?” he asked.

As soon as I saw the picture, I felt an unwelcome shiver run down my spine. “It’s him.”

“Him?” Kane repeated. “Who?”

Lifting my eyes to his, I answered, “He’s the guy that I saw Patrick shoot in the study that night it was filled with all those guns.”

“Well, that explains that,” Leo muttered.

“Explains what?” I asked, my head snapping in his direction.

He hesitated briefly before he explained, “I did a bit of digging and found out who your husband’s employees and acquaintances were. With that list in hand, I expanded my search. There were little things that popped up on a few of the guys, but nothing that wasn’t to be expected. Nothing overly concerning. But this guy was different.”

“How so?” I questioned him.

“Just recently, he was arrested for possession of illegal firearms,” Leo shared. “From what I can gather, there were two guns in which the serial numbers had been shaved off. He had been released on bond and was awaiting trial.”

Oh, God.

Did that mean what I thought it meant?

I shifted my attention to Kane again. “I knew something wasn’t right. Obviously, someone being shot in the head right in front of my face was a big indicator of that, but there were so many guns there.”

Kane and Leo exchanged concerned looks.

“He was silencing him,” Kane said.

Leo nodded. “Yep. If Patrick’s running illegal guns, and this guy was arrested, there was heat on him. He was a target, and Patrick wasn’t willing to have that liability.”

I closed my eyes and sighed.

This was awful.

I’d known for a long time that the man I’d married wasn’t a good man, but this was worse than I could have ever imagined. He killed a man to save his own ass from legal troubles.

If he was willing to do that, what was he willing to do to me, considering I was a witness to his crime?

“Oh, God,” I rasped as the knowledge of just how callous Patrick was hit me full force. “He’s going to want to keep me quiet, too.”
