I shrugged and offered a simple explanation. “They’re my family. I’d do anything for them.”

I already had,I thought.

“It’s beyond admirable,” he declared. “You should be proud of yourself.”

“Thank you. I’ve certainly made my fair share of mistakes, but getting out from underneath Patrick’s watchful eyes and keeping my family out of the loop to protect them is something I don’t think I’ll ever regret,” I assured him.

Following a beat of silence, Kane said, “That’s one more thing I wanted to ask you about.”

“What?”

“Where do you stand with your husband as far as your relationship goes?” he asked.

I shook my head. “I’d love nothing more than to get a divorce. I’ve wanted that since nearly the moment I got married. But I’m not sure I can get what I want and maintain my safety.”

Determination washed over him.

“I’m going to make that happen for you,” he announced.

I cocked an eyebrow. “You are?”

“I am. If you want to be done with this guy, you’re going to be done with this guy. We get what we need, we ensure that there’s not a chance he’ll be able to get to you, and we hand everything over to the necessary individuals. Then, you get your divorce.”

He made it sound so simple and possible.

More than that, he made it sound like he was determined to make it happen for me.

Or, was it for me entirely?

Perhaps Kane had such a resolve about this because he wanted it to happen for him, too.

But as quickly as I had that thought, even if there was a chance it could be true, I brushed it off. It didn’t matter if that would have been a dream come true.

I couldn’t be distracted by what ifs with Kane. I had to be focused on the danger in front of me.

FOURTEEN

Ellery

It wasn’t working.

I didn’t know what I was thinking. I wasn’t sure why I thought I’d be able to do it, but I’d been wrong.

No matter what I did or how hard I tried, I was struggling.

Kane wasn’t making it easy for me to keep myself focused on the things I needed to be learning.

Granted, he was teaching me new techniques, and I couldn’t say that I wasn’t feeling more confident about my skills, but it hadn’t been easy to get there.

It was because of him.

Kane Ramsey.

If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought I was walking around with hearts in my eyes.

He was everything. He was sweet and gentle. He took his time when it came to teaching me. And he never got angry.

Even if I knew that Patrick was still a threat, I couldn’t deny that the fears I’d had when I first arrived in Steel Ridge had diminished substantially over the last two weeks.
