“What do you want from me?” she asked.

I could hear the desperation and despair in her voice. “It’s simple. I want you to come home.”

“And then what? You don’t love me, Patrick. Why would you want me there?” she questioned him.

There was a long pause, which I thought was strange. My stomach turned again, though, when he answered. “Because you’re my wife, Ellery.”

“I don’t want to be married to you any longer,” she informed him.

We heard what sounded like a door opening and closing before he replied, “Are you telling me you want a divorce?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you,” she answered.

“Well, then I guess your sister can take your place,” he told her. “Here, you can give her the good news.”

It was mere seconds later when the vibe in the room went from tense to wired.

“Ellery,” a female’s voice came through the line.

“Ainsley,” Ellery cried, immediately breaking down.

Ainsley didn’t get a chance to respond, because Patrick spoke. “What do you think, Ellery? She’ll make a good wife, won’t she? Though, I’m not sure what the family dynamics will be moving forward. Can you imagine? Sister sleeps with her brother-in-law. It works for me.”

I was growing angrier by the second, and I was certain the same was the case for Leo, Damon, and Magnus. But for Ellery, she merely grew desperate.

“Fine,” she declared. “I’m coming back home. Don’t touch her, and I’ll come back.”

“Don’t play with me, Ellery. If I get the slightest inkling that you’ve betrayed me and brought the authorities, you’ll need to identify her body.”

“I won’t,” she promised. “Just me. I swear, it’ll just be me.”

“You have two hours,” he told her.

“I… I can’t. I’m three hours away,” she pleaded, the tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Then I suggest you drive fast.”

That was the last thing we heard before he disconnected the call.

TWENTY

Ellery

I was a nervous wreck.

Time ran out forty-five minutes ago. I hoped Patrick had been bluffing about hurting my sister and was going to give me the time I needed to get here.

We were just now a few minutes down the road from the house. I had ridden the whole way here with Kane and Damon.

Magnus and Leo rode together in another car while Jake and Nixon, who I finally got to meet, had followed in a third. The guys had all decided it was best to arrive with more manpower than less.

But they wouldn’t be coming in immediately. Kane and Damon were going to join the other guys while I drove the remaining three minutes down the road on my own. They’d follow behind me, but ultimately keep their distance.

If I was a nervous wreck, I wasn’t sure there were any words to describe Kane. He was a mess.

He did not want me going into this at all. He was adamantly against it, and he let me know from the moment Patrick had ended the call hours ago.

We didn’t have time to argue about it, but I insisted I had to do it. I had to try to save my sister, and I couldn’t let him talk me out of doing what I could to protect her.
