Oh, God. What happened?

A moment later, I learned precisely why Kane, Damon, Magnus, Nixon, Jake, and Leo hadn’t come running in to rescue me. To rescue my sister.

“I told you what would happen if you chose to bring the authorities,” Patrick said, his voice menacing.

I shook my head. “I didn’t call the police. I swear I didn’t call them.”

“Don’t lie to me,” he yelled.

“I’m not,” I said, feeling myself begin to panic, my eyes darting to the side again.

Where was Kane?

“Nobody is coming for you, Ellery,” Patrick informed me. The sound of his voice was too calm and eerie. “My men spotted you when you stopped and exited your vehicle down the road. The minute you drove off, my men closed in on the guys you drove up with.”

Oh, no.

Kane.

This was awful. He wasn’t going to be able to help. He couldn’t save us. God, I hoped he was okay.

“You kissed him,” Patrick sneered, taking slow, deliberate steps toward me. “Are you fucking him, too?”

I swallowed hard, my hand tightening on my sister’s shoulder. I had the gun on me, but I wasn’t so confident in my skills just yet that I believed I could pull it out and use it on both of those men before they had the chance to react and shoot back. Ainsley had nothing to protect her body.

I couldn’t risk it.

“You’re my wife, Ellery. Mine. Nobody takes what’s mine,” Patrick shouted, still moving slowly in my direction. “So now, you’re going to be responsible for what happens to the guy that thought it was okay to touch what was mine.”

Just then, movement out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. My head snapped in that direction, and I saw Kane. Patrick spun around at the same time the men lifted their guns and aimed.

One was pointed at him, the other was pointed at me.

Kane didn’t hesitate. He didn’t falter.

He ran in, coming straight for me, and a gunshot rang out. As Kane let out a grunt of pain, three more shots were fired.

Ainsley screamed.

I did the same.

But where I was certain my sister screamed because she was terrified about what was happening, my screaming was the result of Kane’s body dropping to the ground when he took the bullet that was meant for me right to his back.

TWENTY-ONE

Ellery

I didn’t care what was happening around me.

I fell to my knees, screaming, as the tears fell down my cheeks.

Kane had just run in front of a bullet intended for me. He took a bullet to the back for me.

“Kane,” I cried, despite the commotion happening around me.

I didn’t dare to look up. It didn’t matter to me what happened to Patrick or the men who’d fired those shots. I just wanted Kane to be okay.

“Ellery?” Ainsley said, kneeling down beside me.
