I ignored her, too.

My hands went to Kane’s body, and even though I saw no visible signs of the bullet penetrating the vest he’d been wearing—there wasn’t any blood pouring out of his body anywhere—I couldn’t be sure that he wasn’t injured.

If something happened to him, I’d never forgive myself. I brought him into this whole situation, and he had been shot at because of me.

“Please, Kane,” I rasped, pleading with him to respond.

I didn’t know how much time had passed, but it was when Jake came up beside us that Kane groaned.

“Baby, please be okay,” I begged him while Jake worked behind him.

“He’s alright,” Jake assured me. “Other than a nasty bruise he’s going to have from the bullet hitting the vest, he’s going to make it out of this unharmed. I’d be more worried about his mental state, more than anything else.”

I lifted my gaze to Jake and asked, “What do you mean? Why would you say that?”

A sympathetic look washed over him as he smiled at me. “He was a wreck with you coming in here. And when your husband’s men approached him and Damon after you drove off, it delayed us getting here to you and your sister. Needless to say, Kane was frantic.”

“He ran in front of a bullet meant for me,” I rasped as I swiped at the tears that had fallen.

“And I’d do it again for you, princess. Even if I had to do it without the vest.”

My eyes dropped to Kane, and at the sight of his gorgeous eyes looking at me after he’d just shared those words, I burst into tears all over again. “Oh my God, are you okay?”

Somehow, he managed to lift his hand up to touch me and offer a reassuring squeeze. “I’m good, Ellery. As long as you’re okay, I’m good.”

“I’m okay,” I promised. Then, I glanced to my side, saw the wonder and amazement in my sister’s face, and added, “Ainsley’s good, too.”

Kane held his hand out to her. “It’s nice to meet you, Ainsley. I’m Kane.”

She reached for his outstretched hand and shook it. “It’s nice to meet you, too.”

“You want to try to get up?” Jake asked Kane.

Kane didn’t respond with words at first. He merely began moving his body, groaning just a bit as he brought himself to a seated position.

He looked to the opposite side, which forced me to redirect my attention away from him. That’s when I saw that the rest of the Harper Security Ops guys had entered the room and apprehended Patrick. On top of that, it seemed they were also tending to the two men who’d had guns pointed at my sister when I walked in.

“What happened outside?” I asked, too curious about what held them up.

“Two men were out there, but they didn’t realize that we had Jake, Leo, Magnus, and Nixon with us, so they were seriously outnumbered,” Kane explained. “Unfortunately, they did delay us, and I was worried that you’d think I left you to fend for yourself.”

“What’s going to happen now?” I pressed.

At that moment, Magnus walked up. “Police just got here. Leo is talking to them. Nixon and Damon are handling the guys outside, along with Patrick. We’ve got medics heading up to deal with these other two. I’m guessing they’re going to want to interrogate Ellery and Ainsley, though.”

“Thanks, Magnus,” Kane said.

“If you’re good, man, I’m going to go help out the guys,” Jake remarked.

Kane gave him a nod. “I’m good.”

“Ellery? You good?” Jake asked.

I offered a small smile and answered, “Yeah. Thanks.”

His eyes slid to the side. “Ainsley?”

“I’d like to call my parents,” she told him.
