My eyes widened in surprise. “You’re joking.”

Leo shook his head.

“How… how is that possible? How do you have any energy to get yourself through the day?” I pressed, still in disbelief.

He grinned. “I exercise.”

I cocked an eyebrow at him. “What?”

“I get up every morning and work out before I go in to work,” he clarified.

Nodding my understanding, I reasoned, “Okay, but today is Sunday, so you take off, right?”

Leo shook his head. “Nope. But since I’m here on the couch with your warm, soft body pressed against mine this morning, I’ll get my workout in later today after I take you out for coffee and doughnuts.”

I narrowed my eyes playfully and declared, “I don’t think you’re real.”

Instead of responding cleverly using his words, Leo took a different approach. He slid his arm down and around my waist. After shifting my body from his side so that I was resting on top of his, he held me firmly in place and slowly jerked his hips upward. “Does that feel real?”

I swallowed hard, and my lips parted. What I didn’t do was answer him with words.

“You admitted to me last night that you like sweet things,” he started. “I also indicated that I liked sweet things. But the things I find sweet are different than what you do. So, the way I see it is that if I want more of the things that I find sweet, I’m going to find a way to give you what you find to be the same. If giving you doughnuts for breakfast gets me more time kissing you, holding you, and sleeping with your body pressed against mine, then we’re having doughnuts for breakfast.”

Though I didn’t confess it to him, the truth was that he wasn’t the only one who wanted more time with him kissing me, holding me, and sleeping with my body pressed against his. But if he wanted to put in extra work in order to get it by taking me out for doughnuts, it wasn’t going to be me who stopped him.

So, I suggested, “We should probably get off this couch now then.”

“Yeah. I think that sounds like a good idea,” he returned. “I need to run outside and grab my stuff out of my car. If you can give me a place that I can take a piss and brush my teeth, I’ll be ready to go.”

“I can do that.”

With that, I got up and Leo went outside to his car, which I belatedly noticed was a really nice Porsche.

It was still early, and that meant the registration house technically wasn’t supposed to be open just yet. So, I locked up, took Leo over to my house, and directed him to the bathroom.

Before I knew it, we were pulling up outside The Early Bird. When we got out and approached the front door, I couldn’t help noticing Darryl was there. He never sat right at the door, because I think he believed it would make customers uncomfortable. But he was off to the side, and it always broke my heart seeing him there. If I was comforted by anything, it was the fact that it was springtime, and he wouldn’t be freezing outside.

Leo held the door open for me, and the two of us walked inside.

As we made our approach to the front, I couldn’t help but notice that Tarryn was smiling brightly at us, a knowing look on her face.

“Good morning,” she greeted us.

“Morning, Tarryn,” Leo returned, not the least bit bothered.

“Morning,” I murmured.

“What can I get for the two of you today?” she asked.

I glanced up at Leo at the same time he looked down at me. “Whatever Hanna wants.”

Turning my attention to Tarryn, I said, “I’ll have a coffee with cream and sugar, and a chocolate frosted doughnut.”

Tarryn gave me a nod, slid her eyes to Leo, and asked, “Anything else?”

“A glazed and whatever Hanna normally gets for Darryl,” he replied.

I couldn’t stop the smile from forming on my face as warmth spread through me. As Tarryn walked away to get our order, I looked up at Leo. “That’s really sweet of you to do.”
