“What?”

“Getting something for Darryl,” I said.

He grinned at me. “Well, I am trying to impress you.”

I cocked an eyebrow and confessed, “It’s working.”

A proud look washed over him as Tarryn returned and said, “Here are your doughnuts. Let me just grab the coffee.”

She walked away again, and Leo pulled out his wallet. By the time Tarryn was back, he’d pulled out some cash, handed it over, and urged me to the side. “See you later, Tarryn.”

“Bye, Leo. See you, Hanna!”

Offering a friendly smile, I said, “Later.”

Leo and I made our way outside, and the two of us walked over to Darryl.

“Good morning, Hanna,” Darryl greeted me, his eyes quickly shifting to Leo to assess him.

“Good morning, Darryl. This is my friend, Leo,” I told him.

Darryl nodded at him as Leo said, “It’s nice to meet you. Hanna and I got some breakfast for you this morning.”

I held out Darryl’s doughnut while Leo gave him his coffee. “Thank you. I really appreciate it.”

“Of course. You have a lovely day, Darryl,” I said.

“Always the same to you, Hanna. Always the same.”

I smiled at him, turned, and urged Leo to walk away with me.

We made our way back to Leo’s car and got in. Almost immediately, he asked, “Why did you walk away so quickly?”

I had a feeling he was going to ask that. “Sometimes Darryl wants to talk, and other times, he doesn’t. I can always tell what mood he’s in based on where he’s sitting. And where he’s sitting today indicates that he’s not interested in conversation. So, I give him breakfast and let him enjoy it.”

“Wow. Really?” Leo returned.

“Yep. Now, are we allowed to have breakfast in this fancy car, or do we have to wait until we’re back at my place?” I asked.

Leo chuckled. “You’re a grown woman, Hanna. I’m relatively certain you’re capable of not making a mess, right?”

I took a moment to think, saw him grow concerned, and replied, “Most of the time.”

When his eyes widened with worry, I burst into a fit of giggles. I had a feeling Leo thought I was crazy, because something changed in his expression.

Eventually, I settled down and pulled out my doughnut. Leo watched me sink my teeth in for the first bite. “Aren’t you going to have yours?” I asked after I’d chewed and swallowed.

He eyed me for several seconds before reaching inside the bag and pulling out his glazed doughnut. For some reason, I couldn’t manage to take my eyes off of him as we sat there eating our breakfast.

Feeling so many different yet wonderful emotions moving through me, a thought popped into my mind. I didn’t want this to end.

Not yet, anyway.

I knew Leo would have to go home at some point, but I was hoping I could convince him to stay with me a little bit longer. So, after we finished our doughnuts, I said, “I know you’re probably upset that you essentially ate carbs and sugar for breakfast, but I’ve got an idea on what we could do when we get back to my place to help you get a workout in, so you can burn it off.”

Surprise washed over him. Surprise and a bit of caution. “You do?”

Smiling, I nodded and said, “I think it’s only fair that I do this for you since you brought me here for breakfast.”
