And when I climbed back into bed and she burrowed her body next to mine, I held onto her in a way I knew I’d never want to let her go.

I’d never gotten involved in recreational drugs or excessive drinking, but I was beginning to think that perhaps I understood the allure. Maybe it wasn’t the allure so much as it was the need.

Because I was starting to feel a dependency on having Hanna around me.

She made me laugh, she turned me on, and she made everything I’d done with her that much better than if I’d done it alone.

And where it became difficult for a drug addict to focus on anything but his next fix, I was feeling something similar when it came to Hanna. I’d always enjoyed the work I did for a living, but even that was no match to having her around me.

That was why this moment was so particularly challenging.

I was holding Hanna in my arms. Her chest was pressed against mine, and her legs were wrapped around my waist.

If given a choice, I would have much rather preferred to have her just like she was without any clothes on, but it was a good thing I hadn’t been asked what I would have preferred.

Because there wasn’t a single doubt in my mind that if Hanna was naked right now, I wouldn’t be able to walk out the door. It was tough enough as it was. I didn’t need anything else—namely, her unbelievably gorgeous naked body—distracting me from what I needed to do.

“I’m angry,” she said.

Her words indicated she wasn’t happy, but her voice was nothing but sweet. “Angry?” I repeated. “What are you angry about?”

“I’m angry at the person who thought a two-day weekend was enough,” she revealed. “Three days should have been the bare minimum.”

My lips twitched. “I’m guessing now wouldn’t be a good time to tell you that there are times in my line of work when I have to work on the weekends.”

“Really?” she asked, her voice not hiding her genuine surprise.

“Crimes happen on the weekend, too,” I revealed.

Surprise turned into overwhelming concern when she replied, “Crimes?”

“Yes.”

“What do you mean when you say crimes? I thought you were a private investigator,” she said.

Nodding, I confirmed, “I am.”

Her brows knit together as she scrunched up her nose in the most adorable way. “So, aren’t you just hired to find cheating spouses and stuff like that?”

Unable to stop it, I threw my head back and roared with laughter. It took me some time to get myself under control, and when I did, it was clear that Hanna was anything but amused.

“Sweetness, I might have investigated one cheating spouse in all the time that I’ve been working at Harper Security Ops,” I started. “And that wasn’t even the original reason we’d been hired to look into this guy. It just happened to be part of the scandal. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. Wasn’t Ellery’s whole situation a good indicator of the kind of work I normally do as an investigator?”

Worry littered her features as she slowly shook her head back and forth. “No. No, I thought that was a one-time, unique case. You deal with criminals regularly?”

My arms tightened around her, a vain attempt to offer her some reassurance. “I wouldn’t say Idealwith them regularly, and generally, I like to keep my distance from known criminals. But I am often called to work on cases that involve them. I do whatever I’ve got to do to get the job done, and in the end, it works out. Regardless, you don’t have to worry about me, Hanna. I’m good at what I do, and so is my entire team.”

Something strange washed over her face, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was. What I did know was that it no longer had anything to do with her concern over my safety.

Just as I was about to ask her what was going through her mind, she returned the conversation back to what we’d been discussing before. “Well, I guess I can’t really say much about the possibility of you needing to work on the weekend. I can have guests seven days a week here, so who am I to complain?”

I smiled at her, leaned forward, and touched my lips to hers. Hanna didn’t hesitate to kiss me back with all that she had. I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to start my week.

When we finally separated, I lowered her body back to the ground and said, “I’ve got to get home now, so I can get in a workout and a shower, but I’ll call you later tonight when I get home from work.”
