“You’re alright,” he said, working to free me from the harness.

“She… she s-stabbed me,” I stammered through my crying.

“Alright. We’re going to take you and get you all patched up,” he promised.

“Darryl,” I said. “She hit Darryl’s legs with the bat.”

Focused completely on what he was doing, Kane returned, “We’ll get paramedics on the way just as soon as I get you down.”

I stopped talking and allowed Kane to work to free me. Once he managed that, he held me in his arms and said, “Magnus, you’ve got her?”

The other man that I now knew was called Magnus replied, “She’s not going anywhere.”

“I’m taking Hanna inside and calling for medics,” Kane told him. “She’s got stab wounds.”

“Jesus,” Magnus hissed.

“The gentleman over there is Darryl, and his legs are injured,” Kane said as he began moving. “As soon as we can, we want to get him out of this rain.”

“I’m calling for back-up, medics, and police,” Magnus said.

Without another word, Kane continued to move away from the rock wall and toward the houses.

“The registration house is locked up, so we’ll need to go to mine. It’s the one off to the left of the registration house,” I told him.

Kane nodded and carried me the remaining distance to my house. Once we were inside, he moved to the bathroom, laid me down on the floor, and began tending to my wounds. He wrapped a towel around my leg to staunch the blood before lifting my shirt slightly to inspect the wound at my side. “It’s not gushing, so let’s hope it’s just a surface laceration,” he said. “I’m guessing she didn’t hit any major organs.”

Kane went about applying pressure to the wound while we waited for paramedics. When he pulled out his phone, something struck me. Unfortunately, before I could ask my question, he had his phone up to his ear, and he was speaking into it.

“Royce?” A pause, then, “Yeah, I’ve got her. He was right. It was the sister.” Silence filled the room briefly before Kane shared, “Right. Yeah, just let him know that she’s got two stab wounds, but she’s awake and alert. We’re bringing her in right away.” Another pause. “Yeah. Later.”

Kane disconnected the call just as I heard the sirens in the distance.

I used the remaining time I had with him wisely and asked, “How did you know to come here?”

For the first time since we’d entered my house, the seriousness and concentration that had been written all over Kane’s face was gone. A smile replaced it just seconds before he revealed, “Leo woke up and told us that you were in danger.”

TWENTY-ONE

Leo

I was in agony.

None of what I was feeling was related to anything physical. This was all about emotions.

She’s been stabbed.

Royce had relayed Kane’s words, and it was taking everything in me to remain composed and not rip the IV from my arm. According to Kane, she was alive, alert, and they were bringing her in.

But I’d gotten that information what felt like hours ago. I couldn’t take it any longer. I needed to see her; I needed to know that she was okay.

Granted, I was aware that she didn’t want anything to do with me, but that didn’t change what she meant to me. Those few days without her before I’d finally solved this case had been some of the worst days of my life.

And it was all because I’d come to the realization that I did about her. Hanna was the girl for me. She was everything I’d wanted, and I was in love with her.

So, even if she despised me and refused to speak to me, I still cared about what happened to her.

I was never one to shirk my job responsibilities, so I knew I would have stayed on this case until it was solved, but after things ended between Hanna and me, I was even more determined to figure it out. My hope had been that if she realized I’d never suspected her from the start, if she knew that I wanted to clear her name, maybe there’d be a chance for us again.
