For the next few minutes, my hands worked their way up Kiera’s thighs. First, one. Then the other. It was becoming clearer that she’d outdone herself this weekend, because she didn’t manage to open her eyes again.

“Kiera?” I called.

“Yeah?”

“I have something I want to talk to you about before you doze off,” I said.

She used what she had left in her tank to peel her eyes open. “That doesn’t sound good.”

Immediately, I quelled her fears. “There’s nothing wrong. I was going to tell you in the morning, but I don’t want to wait.”

“What is it?”

Grinning, I revealed, “I took the next few days off from work. It’s been two years since we’ve been there, and I thought since you’ve had a few busy weeks, we could take a couple of days and go back to Cardinal Beach.”

In an instant, tears filled Kiera’s eyes as she forced herself to sit up. “See?” she rasped.

“What?”

“I’m the luckier one.”

Even though I knew she was happy with the news, I couldn’t stand to see her cry. So, I reached out, gathered her in my arms, and brought her close. Kiera didn’t hesitate to initiate a heated kiss, but she eventually pulled back and said, “I’m so tired, but I can probably power through for you.”

“Power through what?” I asked.

“Sex.”

Standing from the couch with her in my arms, I began walking to the bedroom. On the way there, I said, “I didn’t wake you up to tell you about this because I wanted sex. Obviously, you know I want to be with you all the time, but that wasn’t what this was about. I know you’re exhausted, Kiera. I just wanted to share the news with you tonight. That’s all. I’m taking you upstairs now, and I’m going to finish giving you your massage. Then I’m going to slip beneath the covers with you and hold you until the morning.”

Kiera lifted her hand to the side of my face. She cupped my cheek, her thumb stroking along my bottom lip. “You’re the best man in the whole world.”

“I love you,” I said, hoping it explained precisely why I did the things I did for her.

Based on the look she sent my way, I had a feeling she understood what I’d hoped she would. “I love you, too.”

A minute later, I settled her in the bed and urged her to her belly. Then I finished her massage. Afterward, just as I promised, I curled up behind her, wrapped an arm around her, and held her close to me, knowing the next few days were going to change our lives forever.

Kiera

This was precisely what I needed.

After the craziness of the last couple of weeks, I needed the time away to not only relax and recharge, but to be able to do it with Johnny.

I couldn’t have loved him more if I tried. The fact that he’d done what he’d done by taking a few days off, so we could reconnect with one another, meant the world to me, and I liked what it told me about how he felt about our relationship.

It was just as important to him as it was to me.

I had genuinely missed spending quality time with him, and if nothing else, these last few weeks had taught me that I never wanted to overbook myself again. I didn’t want to spread myself too thin. I craved time with Johnny, and while he didn’t seem the least bit upset about how much I’d been working over the last several weeks—something I had appreciated tremendously in those moments—I still didn’t like that I hadn’t been able to give him and our relationship the time and attention that I normally would have given.

Johnny was so understanding about it that he didn’t hesitate to bring me here, back to the place we’d met. It was the sweetest, most romantic thing anyone had ever done for me.

We’d checked into our resort earlier, but no sooner had we gotten there when Johnny grabbed a bucket and said, “Let’s head down for a walk in the sand.”

I didn’t care what he said about it all. I was convinced I was the luckier one in this relationship.

Of course, I didn’t put up a fight, since it was clear he was intent on taking me to do one of my very favorite activities to do.
