I climbed out, moved toward Kiera, and lifted her in my arms. “Thank you, Johnny,” she whispered.

My features softened as something warm moved through me, and I leaned in close as I whispered back, “I’d do anything for you, baby.”

Not wanting her to feel pressured to respond, I took off toward the pool with her in my arms and jumped in. From that point forward, we had a great time with our friends.

And it was when I saw her laugh for the first time while we were in the pool that I made myself a promise.

Tonight was the night.

Whatever it took, I was going to fix this mess tonight.

Hours later, just as I was ready to put my plan into action, everything came crashing down.

We’d finished up with dinner, and it was time for dancing. This was where I was going to make my move. Kiera loved to dance, so I could think of no better way to start the process of bringing us back together than by doing one of her favorite things.

When we’d first arrived, the girls immediately took off for the dance floor. The guys and I had stayed off to the side for a bit—Simon wasn’t big on dancing—and grabbed a round of drinks.

Eventually, I couldn’t wait any longer, but I decided to take a detour to the restroom first. I didn’t want the drink I’d just had to interrupt any of what I had planned. On my way back to where I knew I’d find Kiera, I was halted in my tracks.

“Johnny?”

I turned around at the sound of the familiar voice and saw two of my clients, Keith and Marci. They were a husband-and-wife couple about my age, who had me do some work for them a few weeks ago.

“Hey, Keith. Hi, Marci. How are things going?” I asked.

Nodding, Keith replied, “They’re great. Everything has been going really well since you did that work for us. It’s all running smoothly now.”

“And we don’t have to worry about security breaches, either,” Marci added.

“I’m happy to hear that.”

“Darling, I’m going to run into the restroom,” Keith interjected. “Johnny, I’m sorry to be so abrupt, but I’ve got a couple of drinks in me.”

I reached out, shook his hand, and insisted, “It’s no problem. It was great to see you.”

The moment he walked off, Marci asked, “So, are you here on vacation?”

“Kind of,” I replied. “Some friends of mine are getting married this weekend, so we’ve been here all week celebrating with them.”

“Excuse me,” someone said from behind me.

I turned and saw that another guy was attempting to make his way to the restroom. “Oh, sorry,” I lamented, stepping forward toward Marci and out of his way. I shifted my attention back to Marci and said, “We’re in a bad spot here.”

She let out a laugh and replied, “Yeah, I’ll say. I won’t keep you. I hope you have a lovely time at the wedding and enjoy the rest of your trip.”

“Thanks. And, as always, if you ever need anything again, please don’t hesitate to let me know,” I advised.

Marci put a hand to my arm and insisted, “We will.”

After saying goodbye to her and telling her to say the same to Keith for me, I turned and walked away with one thing on my mind.

Time to get my wife back.

But when I caught up with the rest of the girls, I realized that Kiera was nowhere to be found.

“Where’s Kiera?” I asked Talia, putting a hand on her shoulder.

She had been dancing, but she turned around and said, “What are you still doing here?”
