He's the most handsome man I've ever seen. His eyes are green and glistening, like emeralds polished to a high shine. His skin is sun-kissed golden. He has a slight five o'clock shadow that only serves to make him more attractive. It's like the sun painted his face with light.

I shake my head, unable to form any words.

"I know the feeling," he says, patting the spot next to him on the bench. "Care to join me?"

I nod, feeling a strange sense of comfort in his presence.

We sit in silence for a few moments, watching the stars twinkle in the sky.

"I'm Jon," he says finally, breaking the silence.

"I'm Whitney," I reply.

"What are you doing here so late after everyone else has gone home?" I finally ask him.

"I enjoy the work," he says simply.

I stare at him in wonder. His hair is dark, and his jawline is strong and stubbled after a day of work. He looks like one of those men who has to shave at least once—if not twice—a day, but he's still attractive—maybe even more so—with the stubbled jawline.

I can feel my heart beat faster as my gaze travels from his jawline to his piercing green eyes. I can't help but wonder what it would be like to run my fingers through his dark hair and feel his lips on mine.

As if reading my thoughts, Jon turns to me and asks, "What about you, Whitney? What brings you out here so late at night?"

I hesitate, not sure if I should tell him the truth. But there's something about him that makes me want to open up to him.

"I needed to get away from everything. I've been feeling suffocated lately, like I'm living my life for everyone else but myself."

Jon's piercing gaze stares into me before he nods understandingly. "I know the feeling. Sometimes you just need to escape and be alone with your thoughts."

We sit in comfortable silence for a few moments before Jon turns to me and says, "You know, I could show you around the construction site if you'd like. It's not much, but it might take your mind off things for a bit."

I look at him, surprised and intrigued. "Really?"

He nods. "Yeah, why not? I've got nothing else to do tonight."

I smile, feeling a sense of excitement and adventure. Maybe this is exactly what I need—a chance to break free from the monotony of my everyday life and do something spontaneous and exciting.

As we stand up, I can feel Jon's hand brush against mine, and a jolt of electricity shoots through me. His skin is warm and callused. My fingers tingle with energy at his touch.

I gasp and look up to find him studying me with those probing green eyes.

Maybe I should be scared, but I'm not. Suddenly, it feels as if I'm right where I'm meant to be.

CHAPTERTHREE

Jon

I can't believeshe's here. After I went home last night, I spent most of the night researching to find out everything I could about her.

I already knew her name when she told it to me.

I already know she's eighteen.Thank fuck.Though truth be told, I don’t know if I could have stopped myself from wanting her even if she wasn’t legal yet. I’d have stalked her like a madman and waited for the day for her to turn legal.

I already know she's the daughter of the most powerful man in the city.

I also know she's engaged to the mayor's son, but something about that doesn't sit right with me.

She doesn't act like the kind of girl who's happily engaged. She looks too sad, and if she's engaged, what is she doing slipping outside alone so late at night?
