I turned away from him just as he said, “Like what you see?”

I shrugged. “Not bad,” I allowed, “if it weren’t for the crew-cut body type.”

“Crew-cut body type?” He asked, tilting his head to the side and squinting. “That sounds oddly insulting.”

“You know,” I explained, a wry grin making its way to my face. “It’s like a mullet without the party in the back. All business. Straight to the point.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” His eyes narrowed more until his irises were barely visible.

“You’re a plank of wood,” I said finally. “No junk in the trunk.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize we were still using that anachronism,” he said. I grinned wider. Definitely offended.

“You’re a 2x4,” I continued. I laughed then. “A regular plank of wood with extra sanding.”

“I am not.” His grumble, paired with his frown, made me snicker more. “And if you don’t appreciate it, I can find several other girls who will.”

“I bet,” I crowed. I laughed in earnest as he picked up his bag and walked away. “What?” I asked. “Feeling a little salty?”

“No, but thanks for making my day, nerd,” he grumbled.

“Listen here, Skinny Minnie,” I said, pointing a finger at him. “You don’t know it yet, but this is the start of a beautiful friendship.”

The next day, as I was sitting at my desk, my email alert pinged. Great. More rejection letters. Or an order from The Boss. Sighing, I opened it and skimmed it quickly. Not believing my eyes, I read it again.

“I’m not surprised.”

I looked at my phone then held it up to my ear. “What do you mean, you’re not surprised? I’m fucking shocked!”

“Ace, you’ve always had the ability, and the eye for it.” Andrew shifted the phone to his other ear. “I knew someone would see it. And you kept your headshot on your signature, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Exactly.” His voice warmed, and I felt the decadence in it, like thick, warm fudge straight from the pot. “So when will you start?”

“When will I start?”
