“You smell disgusting,” she said. “Let’s get you ready for this party.”

“Is all of this makeup necessary?” I grumbled as Catalina clearly ignored me and put on more eye shadow. “I have more makeup on than the entire cast of Moulin Rouge combined.”

“It’s not necessary because you have the smoothest skin I’ve ever seen on anyone except Andrew,” she replied. “But the makeup is a bonus. It will make your boo forget his own name.”

“Michael prefers me without makeup.”

“Not that boo.”

I cut my eyes at Catalina. She ignored it, per usual.

“Almost done,” she chirped. She wrapped some of my curls around her fingers and gently let go. Like the obedient tendrils they are, they kept their suggested shape. Cat smiled, satisfied. “Okay, go look in the mirror.”

I tentatively stepped in front of the mirror. When my eyes met in the mirror, I gasped softly.

Catalina had turned me into a bona fide princess.

My dress whispered against my knees. The bodice of the gold-colored dress hugged me gently, fanning out once it hit my waist. Layers and layers of gossamer silk made me feel like I was supported by clouds. I ran my fingertips down the fabric in wonder.

And then I looked at my face.

Big, doe eyes stared back at me in surprise. Gold eyeshadow sparkled around my eyes, and my skin glowed. My lips parted around teeth that stood straight and bright, in stark contrast with my skin. My hair had been in an old twist-out, stretched for days, which made it easier to put it in an updo. Small curls played around my temples and ears, while the rest was held back by a matching gold-colored, metal headband.

“Catalina.” I found her eyes in the mirror and she smiled proudly. “Thank you.”

“I did nothing but work with what you already have,” she said. She looped her arm through mine. “Now let’s find your man.”
