The explosion that shakes the room is one-hundred times stronger than the one that decimated the Kansas warehouse—deadlier than dynamite.
Luigi crashes into the wall as his rifle flies out of his hands.
That’s when the sound of the chopper roars through the air.
"Take this, motherfucker," I hear Faro yell over the roar of the carnage.
"No," I shout, scrambling after the Riccardis. "I’m still down here—you’ll kill me!"
Faro can’t hear me. "Bang bang, bitch."
A barrage of military-grade bullets rams into the warehouse.
The Riccardis scream as they duck for cover, avoiding the certain death my brother will inflict.
I reverse course and head for the window, heaving myself out.
Holy. Shit.
My brotherreallyneeds to check with me before he does shit like that.
When I’m safe, I wave my fist at the helicopter. "You fucking assholes nearly killed me!"
Lazaro rolls down the chopper’s window. "We saw Mattie fly through the window and thought you were already safe, bro!"
I dust off my shoulders. "I’m out now.Take the Riccardis down."
My brothers don't need another command.
A twenty-foot-long machine gun extends from the helicopter and points at the warehouse.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
The number of bullets that flies out of it is insane.
The oversized gun shoots and shoots, refusing to stop for anyone, blasting the facility to smithereens.
Screams reach our ears from the inside and I’m certain they’re the Riccardis.
Yet—a frisson of doubt lingers.
Are they really dying? Or is this someone else—some guards they left behind?
"Raze that shit," I scream, pointing at the warehouse.
Mattie pries himself off the grass. "Daddy!"
I turn to my boy… and groan as I take him in. Soot covers his cheeks and mats his perfect hair. His pointy nose is bleeding. Yet—his blue eyes shine through the mess.
With a growl, I heave him into my arms. I slam my lips on his, pouring my heart into the kiss, showing him how much I care.
As I swirl my tongue around his mouth, I let him know I love him, I’m here, refusing to let anything happen to him.
