As he chomps it down and then swallows, I can’t resist the urge to tousle his hair.

Mattie has no idea how cute he is. None whatsoever. That makes him ten times hotter.

When he surprised me in bed this morning, I thought I’d pass out from joy.

He takes initiative—he doesn’t merely lie around and wait for Daddy to make the first move.

Hewantedto explore my body—couldn’t fucking wait until I "woke up."

(Of course, I was wide awake and giving him my consent, so he didn’t actually touch me while I was asleep.)

Still, his eagerness spoke volumes.

It bodes well for our relationship.

I rub his belly. "Tell Daddy how the pineapple tastes."

Mattie stares at my hand on his tummy—then squirms. "Fresh. Good."

I pinch his side. "Tell Daddy what’s on your mind."

Mattie grits his teeth. "I like your hand on my tummy. It makes me feel Little—I like it. Am I weird? A freak?"

I shake my head. "Don’t worry about it. I enjoy doing it—you like when I do it. That’s what matters."

Mattie lifts his shirt. "You make butterflies swirl around my belly. I wish I could put them back in their cage. Or catch them with a net and release them. Right now, they’re stuck."

My eyes drift up to his. I’m on the verge of saying something snarky when his loving expression rams a clothespin on my tongue—andsteals my ability to speak.

In the morning sunlight, thus illuminated, thus glistening, his blue irises appear to have dolphins swimming in them. Their tails swish back and forth through the cerulean surf and they make squawking noises as they frolic and play.

"Not butterflies, boy.Dolphins."

"Huh?" Mattie’s eyebrows fork.

I massage his belly. "The dolphins that live in your beautiful eyes swam to your belly. They’re causing trouble. They know they’re far away from home—they want to get back to your blue irises. But they don’t know how. That’s why you feel squirmy when I touch you here. The dolphins are wriggling."

Mattie stifles a snort. "Oh my God. I never would’ve thought of that."

"That’s why you have Daddy." I issue him a stern look. "He helps you understand what’s going on with your body."

"Maybe my belly contains a new species of dolphin," Mattie muses. "Adolphin butterfly. They’re adorable dolphins that have colorful wings."

I close my eyes to picture this fantastical creation. Wow. In my mind, pairs of dolphin butterflies flap their blue wings through the air, searching for a way to get back to Mattie’s eyes.

I run my thumb around the rim of his bellybutton. "Our imaginations complement each other."

"You can say that again."

Just then, a burst of noise sounds as three hungry boys rush into the kitchen.

"What’s for breakfast?" Ryder demands.

"I’m starving." This is obviously Cyan.

Enzo isn’t far behind. "I love Nonna’s cooking, but I want 'Merican food. No more cheese platters. I need goddamn pancakes."

Three more people stomp into the kitchen.
