Giosuè, Faro, and I take another good look at our surroundings. What. The. Fuck?

Never in my life have I seen anything like this. Giant windows surround us and let us glimpse sunkissed teal water. Fish swim by, rainbow and sparkling.

The blue crabs we saw claw their way around the cylinder—especially around one certain part that emits bubbles.

Gas.

I don't know why this thought occurs to me—but the blue crabs must be attracted to a special gas that the submarine is emitting.

"We're on a goddamn submarine." Giosuè’s voice is grim. "Christ—I didn’t even think we needed to be aware of those."

My eyes tick up. Sure enough, the submarine we’re inside of becomes clearer. The shape, windows, and water surrounding us make it plain as day.

Someone fashioned a device to nab us from our crab-catching rocks. And locked us in a fucking submarine.

"It’s not even a yellow one," Faro spits out, heading to the windows and glancing at the sides. "It’s just gray."

Giosuè walks to his brother and places his hand on his shoulder. "That’s the least of our concerns."

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a door. I run toward it, then bang it. "Let us out!"

My voice echoes throughout the hermetically sealed room—but it doesn’t affect whoever’s listening on the other side.

I wonder if there are microphones in here. Or cameras. My gaze lifts, combing over every inch of the space.

At last, I spot a tiny dot that resembles what can only be a camera—yes. There’s no doubt about it.

The red speck of light that flashes beside it, the one that glows brighter when I focus on it, lets me know what it is.

I race toward the camera. Putting my face right in front of it, I stare at whoever’s watching. "You bastards better let us out of here this fucking second."

That’s when a sinister laugh fills the space. A door on the far side opens, and three men in masks step out.

"Look what we have here." One of the men smirks as he points a rifle at me. "Well, aren’t we lucky?"

The man to his left nods. "You can say that again."

Giosuè freezes in his tracks. "No."

Faro gulps loudly as he rubs his hands on his soaked shorts. "You’ve got to be kidding me."

"No one’s joking around," the third man growls, aiming a pistol at Faro. "Thank God you all finally decided to head to your crab spot today. We were worried you wouldn’t show up."

Giosuè clenches his fists. "You’re the Riccardis."

The first man who spoke removes his mask. When he casts it to the ground, I stare into the eyes of the scariest man I’ve ever had the misfortune of seeing.

"We’ve got an Einstein on our hands, fratelli." The man smirks as he looks Giosuè up and down. "AfemmeEinstein—one who wears panties while solving mathematical riddles."

Giosuè gnashes his teeth. "Let us go."

"Yeah," Faro spits out, his eyes glowering. "Do it now and we won’t hurt you."

The man who’s no longer wearing a mask bows. "I should officially introduce myself. My name is Luigi. These are my two brothers Petrie and Giuseppe. Earlier this year, your cousin Amedeo murdered our brother, Paulo—and Vincenzo hired men to clean up the mess."

"We know." Giosuè doesn’t mince words. "My family already apologized—multiple times. We want to mend fences."

"It’s a little late for that, don't you think?" The man to Luigi’s left removes his mask. "I’m Petrie—and your apologies are worthless. Amedeo murdered Paulo over aland deal.Do you know how terrible that is? Paulo didn’t have to die—he wasn’t even involved in our Mafia business."
