“The boy listened to me. Now it’s time for you to listen to me, Amalia. You know what I’m capable of.” He makes me face him.

Aidan is never kidding when it comes to harm and suffering.

“Get in!” He forces me to sit behind the wheel, and then he sits on the passenger seat. Wearing Officer Cooper’s belt, he takes his time adjusting it. “Don’t you just love scoring freebies from a cop?”

He’s got Officer Cooper’s gun and handcuffs. But I can see something else, something that doesn’t belong to the officer. A sailing knife.

“Do I have to tell you not to do anything stupid?”

“I’ll do whatever you say.”

“I could’ve planted a bomb in Rob’s room. My right hand man could’ve been in the house by now.”

My hair stands on end.

“Look at you,” he mocks, obviously enjoying the terror on my face. “No, I won’t kill Rob. You should know that by now.” He tosses me a smile, as if saying he’s winning. “I’m actually glad he didn’t die in that car accident. I’d rather watch him die of a broken heart. But I do have someone you love that I won’t hesitate to kill.”

Mama…

“Don’t you touch her!”

“Do as I say, then,” he says. “Drive.”

ROB

My sidekick brother and I sit tensely in front of his laptop while Matty is outside somewhere with Amber-Rose, Andre, and Officer Cooper, probably discussing techniques to tackle a bad guy.

“Blake has found the connection between that hoodie man and Aidan,” Clay says.

“No shit! Really?”

“His name is Fernando Lopez. Aidan met him in Tijuana. He’s a mechanic who fixed his car when he was there. I bet he found out the mechanic was a car thief, too, and he dragged Fernando in.” Clay shows me a photo of the two men talking in front of a garage.

Good old Blake.

Clay explains, “The footage from the post office in Long Beach, and from the street in Santa Maria, didn’t really show his face. But check this out.”

“Son of a bitch!” The man is at a Target store buying a doll.

“Here’s the good news. Blake tracked his car, a rental.”

“Where is he?”

“Last known location—Santa Maria.”

“Call Garcia. Get her to alert the Santa Maria police. He’s coming for Mama.”

My cell buzzes—it’s Blake. “Yeah.”

“Rob, your so-called Aaron-Reid Smith has just listed a new address.”

I clutch my cell. The second Blake tells me where it is, I’m going there.

“It’s your house.”

My blood goes cold. “Fuck!” I swivel. “Clay, he’s coming,” I grind out as I run to the verandah. I’ve gotta get Matty and Amber-Rose.
