“Aidan took me to some cottage. Track my watch, Rob.”

My heart releases a beat of triumph. Of course! She’s wearing her smartwatch.

“I know where you are. I’ve been tracking his car. I’m close! Stay put, I’m coming.”

“I think he’s going to switch cars. He’s taking me on a boat.”

She’s so far inland. It doesn’t make sense.

“Please, Rob,” she quavers. “I can’t go through it again…”

Her pain bleeds into me. “No. Amber-Rose, I’ll get to you.”

Then I hear noises.

“Amber-Rose?”

She whispers, “I’m going to share my location, and I have to conserve the battery. Hang up now.”

Then I hear a man’s voice, which I’m almost certain is Aidan. “Are you ready to go, my love?”

“Where are we going?” Amber-Rose responds.

“Have faith in me,” the son of a bitch says. “We’ll have a good time, and you’ll realize what you’ve been missing all these years.”

Rustles, clanks and footsteps mix into each other. After a few seconds, the call ends.

With many miles still ahead of me, I slam my foot on the accelerator. I don’t want that call to be the last time I heard her voice. I can’t fuck this up again.

Meanwhile, on my tracking app, Aidan’s rental car is still stationary in Pine Valley. So she was right, he has definitely switched cars. Where the hell is her location share? I need to know where she is!

When I finally arrive at the cottage, I find Aidan’s rental in the driveway, and there’s a van parked behind it—it could be Fernando’s.

“Amber-Rose!” I call, my gun steady in my hand. I can feel that she was here, I can smell her, but they’re gone.

Instead of seeing her or Aidan, I hear Paola.

“Rob!”

Before I even get to where the voice is coming from, I feel something poking into the back of my head. “Stop right—”

Without giving the attacker a second to react, I pivot and kick his straightened arm. I’m not in the mood for this!

There’s a crack, and I’m sure he’s at least dislocated his elbow. A gun drops from the man’s hand, firing as it hits the floor, the bullet hitting a wall.

“Rob!” Paola calls to me in horror.

“You think you can bring down a SEAL?” I stare at the man I know is Fernando. Aidan could’ve hired a better accomplice. This guy might know how to tamper with cars, but he has no chance against me.

The guy spits at me. “I hate rich men! Especially the cocky ones,” he says, biting back the pain. But I can see his eyes are moving toward his gun, which is now lying on the floor, just out of his reach.

I drag Fernando to the corner of the room. He’s about to kick me.

I put a bullet in his knee.

“Where is she?”

“That whore?”
