“Is the baby okay? After all this?” She looks at the gadgets around her bed.

“The baby is just fine. Their mom has protected them.”

She nods her head a few times. Then she chuckles. “You knocked me up pretty fast. I know how you cum, but that fast?”

Amber-Rose laughs but stop midway, grimacing at her chest.

“Shh… stop laughing now.”

She settles, rubbing her own belly. “How did the doctor know? We did it without a condom less than a week ago.”

“You’re three weeks along. So…”

Her mouth forms an ‘o.’ Beaming, she says, “Huh! So that condom did leak.”

“I guess so.”

She stares at the ceiling, as if recalling our sex in my office that afternoon. “It was way too small for you.”

Ego fills me. Yes, ‘large’ was too small for me.

“You know, Rob, you looked so handsome in that wetsuit. It felt like I was being saved by a SEAL, the stuff of legend.”

That probably is a fantasy for a lot of women, but the reality isn’t as glamorous or exciting. I don’t want the near-death confrontation with Aidan to ever repeat itself, but if she can extract just a bit of fantastic heroism out of it, I can say I did good.

I gaze at her lovingly. “I looked scary when I was a SEAL, believe me.”

“Menacing? Badass?”

“You could say that.” I wonder what adventure she has in mind with those words.

“I was saved by a SEAL,” she insists, closing her eyes as if she’s ready to fall asleep again. Or fall in love again.

AMBER

Three months later

“Is this your idea of fun?” I look at Rob suspiciously when he escorts me to Hartley Marine’s Newport Beach jetty.

“After all this time, you still don’t trust me around boats?” Rob stays close to me as we make our way up the ramp. “What happened to our night at Avila Beach?”

It’s not that I don’t trust him. I do. When he said he was taking me on a special date, he failed to mention ‘boat,’ and I guess I haven’t prepared myself for it. After what happened with Aidan, I don’t know how I’ll feel being back out in the water. I don’t think it’s fear—I’m just tentative.

Rob looks at the clear sky. “The sea is calm, so it should be a smooth journey.”

As his head tilts up, his Adam’s apple moves above his tuxedo shirt collar. Hell! I don’t care if the heavens throw a storm right now, as long as I’m with him. The man is as masculinely delicious as he was when I first saw him. Like the sun shining on the earth, I’m certain my desire for him will never diminish, no matter how old we get.

Catching my gaze, Rob caresses my face, his other hand on my belly.

“God, you look good,” he comments on my white slip dress. It’s his favorite. My bump is just visible behind the stretchy fabric. My breasts are hugged by translucent lace; the scar from Aidan’s knife on my cleavage is hidden behind a layer of makeup. I haven’t felt the need for cosmetic surgery, but maybe in time I will. Right now, I’m happy that Rob’s gold chain is protecting it. The man himself said to me, ‘It really doesn’t matter. You’re Amber-Rose, scar or no scar.’

He plays with my fingers, wrapped tight in his hand. “If you really don’t want to go, I won’t force you.”

I lean into him, producing a seductive pout. “Convince me, then.”

“You want to hear a story?”
