“Was the explosion Aidan’s work, too?” I’d told her about the incident at Hartley Marine yesterday.

“Unlikely. The machine overheated because of a defect in the material that we ordered months ago. Rocky is going to be okay. And as for Aidan’s movements, Blake is tracking them, starting from the last time he was seen in Fresno.”

She nods but still looks troubled. Then she yanks at my hand.

“What is it?”

“You should unlock the car from here.” We’re still about twenty yards away from it.

“Okay.” I press the button on my Porsche key. It beeps, and we wait for a minute. “Stay here.” I stride toward the car, checking under it and under the hood.

“Please check it again.” Amber-Rose trembles when I fetch her.

“It’s okay.”

“Please, Rob,” she sighs helplessly. “He’ll do anything to get me back.”

Her hug is fierce, and I embrace her just as tightly. “And I will do anything to defend you. From now on, you stay with me, okay?”

I breathe deeply into her hair, and my eyes slam shut. I wish her intense angst was a false alarm, but I don’t think it is. This shit has to stop.

I’ve gotta get that son of a bitch.

AMBER

When I survived Aidan, I never thought his retaliation would scare me like it does now. I didn’t take into account the possibility of meeting someone like Rob—a man I fear losing more than I do losing my own life. A vision of Rob’s car getting blown up at Venice Beach kept playing in my mind. I guess we both would’ve been dead if it had come true. But forget about my demise—I couldn’t let that happen to Rob.

We head straight to Hartley Marine, and we shower at Rob’s office.

It calms me down having his lathered body against me, his hands palming my wet skin all over—he doesn’t miss an inch of it.

“Thank you,” I say, letting him out of the shower so he can get ready.

“For what?” He skates his hands along my curves one last time before stepping out.

“For holding me.”

He beams as he dabs himself with a towel. His pliant shaft hangs shyly. Even without an erection, I can affirm that he is fucking gorgeous.

I gather every gob of strength to step out of the shower, not wanting to miss out on my man getting dressed. It’s one thing seeing him get naked, but watching him ready himself for the day enhances the significance of our intimacy. The world (including other girls who want to fuck him and drink his semen) sees Rob in one way—handsome, clothed, pragmatic, astute—but onlyIhave the privilege of seeing and having all of him to my heart’s desire.

Rob takes a shirt and pants from a closet. I’ve never seen a man put on business attire in under two minutes—and he looks a million times hotter than Christian Grey.

My breasts perk up, and my nipples shout at Rob to come and hug me again. But I quickly wrap myself in a towel.

“Last night while you were asleep, I was thinking…” Rob spins his laptop to let me see.

Six photos are tiled on the screen—all men, muscular and menacing.

“Do you like any of them?” he asks.

I cringe with skepticism. “None. Who are they?”

“They’re your potential bodyguards.”

“Rob, I don’t need a bodyguard! What happened to ‘I’m safe with you’?”
