“Two hundred miles.”

Blake and I glance at each other. We’ve got to fly if we want to save her.

“Rob, I’ll call you back!” I turn to Blake. “Let’s go to the airport and see what our options are.”

As Blake takes the wheel, I steal a few minutes to digest what has happened and to convince myself that Isabelle is still alive.

She is. Too much is at stake for her not to be alive.

“So, suppose that cap belonged to a man, Don’s man, then he was shot, yes?”

“Yes. Likely in the head. That was why the strap was damaged. Or in the face, and the bullet exited behind his skull,” Blake proposes.

“And she did that, yes?”

“She shot my windscreen, and I’m the good guy.” His eyes cross to me, provoking a thought.

Of course she did it!

My head falls back, bouncing against the seat’s headrest, wishing she was in my arms right now—right at this moment. I would kiss her. I would tell her how much I love her.

I let out a harsh breath.

“You okay, man?” Blake asks.

“Yeah. Just keep driving!”

She was protecting her baby. That was how Isabelle garnered the grit to kill Fletcher’s man that way. She was protecting two people, and she simply had to destroy him. I wish she had done that to Fletcher, too.

“We need Wyatt,” Blake says.

“He needs to stay with Raffi.”

“You’ll need another pair of hands, Clay, I can assure you.”

“You are that other pair of hands, Blake!”

“Whatever we can find at the airport, someone needs to fly the fucking thing, and it’s not gonna be you.”

“I’ll fly it!”

“Wyatt will!” He sounds like Rob now. “When we find Isabelle, you will be with her. And then, I’ll be your extra pair of hands.”

He’s right—and I guess this is why he’s by my side, my voice of reason.

“But I’m worried about leaving Raffi alone. That boy is traumatized.”

“I know. But we can’t go without Wyatt.”

“Do you think Raffi will be okay with Crawley?”

“I’ve asked Crawley to reassure Raffi that neither he nor his mother is in trouble. I’m certain he’s told Raffi that by now.”

I call my pilot. “Meet me at the airport.”

“Sure, Mr. Hartley.”

Blake speaks into my phone. “Get Crawley to take Raffi to his home—his wife and son will be happy to keep him company.”
