She gives me a nod. “Clayton. I’ve been thinking.” She caresses Faber’s hair. “I’m not so sure if I want to finish my degree.”

I put my hand on her shoulder. “Hey, what brought that on?”

“I don’t know… I kind of want to be a full-time mom.” She gazes at Faber—her motherly love shines through. You could almost touch it.

“Whatever you want to do, I’m behind you, okay? Personally, I think you should complete your degree. Many kids will thank you for it. And you won’t be short of subjects to practice your skills on,” I quip. “Matty, Raffi, Graeme, Mia, Faber. Our next baby.”

Her eyes light up, hearing those names. It’s like they’re her world, and she’s the sun, so she’s got to keep shining.

She slants her face to me and grins. “Okay. I’ll think about it.”

“I’ll be a stay-home dad if that’s what it takes. Whatever you want, baby.”

Faber soon cries. “Hey, Mommy’s here,” Isabelle murmurs.

I admire the perfect form in her arms, suckling hard at her nipple.

Isabelli Luna Martins. She turned my life upside down, only to fill my heart with riches beyond what I thought possible. Many times I reflect on her vow—that her feelings for me are more than love.

She’s right.

Love is too soft, abstract, and prosaic to describe us. We’re two souls forged in fire and bonded by strife. She’s the better half of me whom I will cherish forever.
