“Yeah. Adler has been warning me about him. He had dinner with three Chinese guys, and it wasn’t about importing live giraffes into the United States.”

“Huh… new investors?”

“Maybe. Get Blake to snoop on him, will you? If his new venture will affect Hartley Marine, we’ve got to know now. If it’s got something to do with national security, Adler will take care of it.”

“Good idea.”

“Talking about Hartley Marine, is everything okay?”

“Brother, you’re on vacation. The only thing you need to worry about is the fact that you’ve used up your annual leave,” Rob deadpans.

I feel better already.

“So, what was your bad idea?” Rob probes.

And just like that, my feeling better is canceled.

“Never mind,” I say and change the conversation. “I had a date with Mrs. Mac tonight.”

“Oh, bless her. How’s she?”

“She’s good. She said I’m waiting for someone who needs me.”

“Clay, is that bad idea a woman?”

I sigh out my admission. After all, I do want to tell my brother about her.

In the background, I can hear Rob persuading his son to play on his own again. This time Graeme seems to listen to his dad. Rob then asks me, “Someone you met there?”

“Yes.”

“A local?” my brother drawls.

“Fletcher’s girlfriend.”

“Fuck, Clay! That is aterribleidea!”

“It is, brother. I know.”

“Since when did you lay eyes on someone else’s girlfriend?”

“Don’t say that. It sounds so bad.”

“Because it is, Clay. Don’t dig your own hole again. I don’t think you can survive another relationship drama, or a love triangle for that matter.”

My big brother has been through what I went through in the desolation department, although that lucky ex-frogman has found his soulmate. He deserves Amber—hell, they deserve each other—but heaven knows if I’ll ever be so lucky.

“Turn away, do you hear me?” Rob warns me again.

“Yeah.” I rub my chin.

“Graeme! Stay in this room,” Rob calls his son. Then he talks to me again. “What are you gonna do tomorrow?”

“I don’t know.”

“You sound like the most miserable tourist in Africa.”

“Perhaps.”
