I could’ve gone one step further and accepted his offer. He said he didn’t understand my situation, but he would help me. I believed him, and I had my hopes up.

If only Don didn’t hold all the cards.

Hell, if only Don didn’t hold that one crucial card—my son—I wouldn’t have left that safe house that is the warm and alluring Clayton Hartley.

The creaking of the wooden door and the sleaze-smelling air I’m entering compel me to bow helplessly.

Welcome back to the Reaper’s lair.

“There you are,” Don speaks flatly.

I simply tighten the wrapping of the blanket, trying to savor the smell of Clayton to counter the foulness surrounding me.

He then asks his bodyguard, “Did you cancel the doctor?”

“Yes, sir.”

Don rips the blanket off me. Disgust flies out of his eyes as if I’d just been fucked by a dozen men.

I wrap my arms across my chest. After being so close to Clayton, having experienced his hold and care, it just doesn’t feel right for any other man to look at me, let alone touch me.

“I just needed fresh air,” I reply.

It’s true. Whatever drug he gave me, it suffocated me. I wouldn’t be so stupid as to run away in my nightgown without a passport in a foreign country where the kidnapping of western citizens is a common occurrence.

“You choked me, Don. You fucking drugged me!”

“I’m allowed to do anything to you.”

“Where did you take Raffi?”

“Oh, he’s fine. He’s just being a pussy,” Don sneers. “He’s fed, and he’s done his homework. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”

“You took him to a stranger’s place, for god’s sake!” I bark. “Take him back to Pippa’s.”

“Of course, darling. When we land in L.A. Right now, though, he’s my insurance policy, and he’s staying where he is.”

“I won’t go anywhere.”

“Of course not. I just want to… rattle you a little.” He curves his lips sideway.

“I’ve never broken my promise. I just went out for fresh air,” I tell him again.

“Yeah. I believe you.”

“At least let me talk to Raffi, please. Just to assure him.”

He bites dead skin off his lower lip, ruminating on my plea. “All right.” He gestures to his man to dial a number. I can immediately hear my son’s voice in the background while a man mumbles to answer the call.

“Put my son on!” I demand as soon as Don passes me the phone.

The man on the line simply lets out a heavy breath, and then I hear Raffi. “Mom… I don’t know where I am. I’m scared.”

“You’re safe, baby. Uncle Don just moved you to his friend’s place. Don’t be scared.”

“When are you coming home?”

“Soon. Do as you’re told, and you’ll be fine.”
