“Deceased.”
“Suspicious circumstances?”
“Her mother died of pneumonia complications, but her father—well, maybe, maybe not. Heart failure from a drug overdose.”
Not a happy past, and her present may be even worse. “She has a son. Raffi. Is he Fletcher’s?”
“No. Rafael Martin is her boyfriend’s son.”
“Her boyfriend? As in… another boyfriend?”
“Technically, Donovan Fletcher isn’t her boyfriend. The Don has got a girlfriend, an ‘official’ one,” Blake explains. “He was good friends with Martin’s boyfriend, though.”
“So, where’s her boyfriend?”
“Dead. Car accident.”
I nod with a sigh.
Blake adds, “It didn’t sound suspicious, but after his death, Fletcher acquired his company. This was three years ago. Fletcher was the tech king on the West Coast, and Martin’s boyfriend’s company was based on the East Coast—pretty successful, too.”
“Total domination?” I comment.
He shrugs, as if reminding me that anything can happen with Fletcher.
“Is Raffi her only child?”
“Yes.”
I swivel my chair. “So Isabella is Fletcher’s mistress?”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
Bastard. That stray cat really doesn’t deserve her!
“Any other boyfriends that I should worry about?”
“No. She’s never been with anyone else since her boyfriend’s death. I guess she’s devoted to her son.”
“Is Fletcher abusing Raffi?”
That disturbs Blake’s neutral face. “What makes you think so?”
“That night at the manor, she got a call from her son. He was in distress.”
“So far, I haven’t found anything that points to Fletcher hurting the boy. But it doesn’t mean he hasn’t—I just haven’t focused my investigation on that. Martin and her son live in a house owned by Fletcher, but as far as I know, The Don is hardly there—too busy with his work and his girlfriend, too, I guess. So I don’t see a reason why he would want to abuse the boy.”
“Maybe Fletcher simply uses her son to keep her obedient.” I tap my fingers together, recalling how she changed that night after the call. “Why didn’t Fletcher take his girlfriend to Kenya?”
“His last known official girlfriend is a daughter of a Wallstreet financier. I heard their relationship is on the rocks.”
“You do know everything, don’t you?”
“Well, I don’t know what’s on your mind.”
“I think you do.”
“Love?”
