Gareth spoke up then. “I got a call from my brothers early this morning and I wanted to tell you what they said but you weren’t up yet and then Scotty showed up. They spoke with the New York League and told them about Pierre’s involvement to take your assignment, Jasmine, which everyone knows he has done before. They can verify that since you had signed up for the missions and he turned in the kills. Long story short, they have put Pierre on a rogue list now and you’ve been cleared.”

“Woohoo!” Jasmine jumped up from the couch and pumped her fist.

Everyone laughed, but Stasio was feeling somewhat disheartened. Yeah, he was just as thrilled she wasn’t a target of Pierre’s maliciousness now, though he did worry that Pierre would come after her next—as a rogue and not an assassin taking down a rogue vampire like he had portrayed her to be.

But Stasio didn’t want to lose her if she returned to being an assassin in New York. If Stasio went with her, then they could very well realize she really did have feelings for a rogue and put him on the rogue list too. That’s why what they had accomplished in Scotland was so important. They were perfectly safe here.

As long as the new council members were held accountable and didn’t act like little dictators, they worked for their kind and improvements would be made, this would be the perfect place to make a home, for now.

Stasio wished she had discussed this with him alone first, but she probably figured he would try to talk her out of it. She was so strong-willed that he really didn’t believe he would have been successful at it though. And he really did intend to support her in anything she wanted to do.

Caitlin said, “We’re with you in this, you know. All of us. We stick together. All for one and one for all. We wouldn’t think of letting you go there on your own.”

“You are all rogues,” Jasmine reminded her.

“We won’t give our true identities,” Levka said. “We’ve never been to New York, except to make flight connections. But I believe we should stay here for the time being. Rest, recuperate, enjoy the fact we’re not on the run right now. We have a beautiful estate to enjoy for the time being. If we leave, someone else will undoubtedly occupy it and if we return, we’ll be on our own again. As long as Gareth remains here with us in Scotland, he’s safe. In the meantime, your brother, who lives in New York, could possibly build a case against the elder and then you can confirm what you’d learned.”

Gareth nodded. “Exactly. You can have my phone and go through all the text messages and emails between Edith and me. You can see how nasty she could be. How she threatened to tell her grandfather I was a rogue. She gave no reason, but just said she was his little princess and everything she asked him to do, he did. She even said she had two former boyfriends that she had put on a list, when she was threatening me.”

“Oh, that’s awful,” Jasmine said. “So she has had others terminated for spitefulness. Talk about a black widow.”

Stasio hoped Edith hadn’t successfully had the other guys assassinated, but it showed just how powerful the elders had become.

Jasmine sat in silence for a while, then said, “Alright. We’ll stay here for a while and I’ll have my brother, Brett, look into the girlfriend.”

“Ex-girlfriend,” Gareth said.

“She needs to be on a terminal list before she has anyone else eliminated for no good reason,” Jasmine said.

Everyone agreed.

Jasmine started texting on her phone. Even though they could communicate with each other telepathically, they could only do so if they were within a few miles of each other. Not across the ocean. Then she shared Gareth’s emails with her brother.

Her brother called her then and she put it on speakerphone so everyone could listen in.

“Hey, so since you’re accusing the elder of targeting Gareth as a plot of vengeance on his granddaughter’s behalf when Gareth isn’t a rogue, you’re going to have to come here in person. That’s the problem with the league here. They can add someone to the list and they don’t have to have any verification to prove a vampire is a rogue. But you have to prove the elder and his granddaughter are acting maliciously, that they either fabricated Gareth’s rogue status, or just added him to a terminal list with no reason offered. Now you said Gareth’s brothers helped to prove that Pierre was a rogue, so that’s good. Gareth will have to testify against the elder and his granddaughter. Because you’re involved as an assassin who was assigned to take him down, you’ll need to be with him, to prove how serious this is.” Brett sighed. “There could be a backlash.”

“From the elders?”

“Yes, and you certainly don’t want them to learn you and your friends just overthrew the Scottish League.”

“You know about that?” Jasmine sounded shocked and worried.

“Yeah, but only because I’m a hunter and Gareth’s brothers had checked me out when they were trying to learn all they could about you. You were after their brother after all. Then they learned you had a hunter brother too so we had something in common. They want to go with you and Gareth to ensure you stay safe in case the elder puts a hit out on you,” Brett said.

“I’m going with her,” Stasio said.

“You’re Stasio, right?” Brett asked.

“Yeah.”

“Gareth’s brothers told me you could be a problem.”

“I’m not changing my mind.”

“He’s going with me. If he hadn’t been with me, Pierre would have already terminated me,” Jasmine said.

Stasio was glad she stuck up for him with her brother.
