“You look beautiful.”

It’s not only the words. It’s how he says them, the warmth underlying each syllable. It’s how I know he means them. “Thanks. You look amazing.”

The corner of his lips tilt up, the blue in his eyes warming. “Thanks.”

We stare at each other a few more moments before he clears his throat. “Ready?”

“Yes.” I lock the door behind me and we walk to his truck. He holds the truck door open and lets me get in.

“Georgia.”

“Yes?” I turn my head and suddenly he’s so close. He’s leaned in, one arm resting on the seat next to my left leg. I’m wonderfully caged in.

“I’m glad you agreed to be my date.” His gaze falls to my lips.

“Me too.”

He swallows and pulls away. As he walks around the truck and gets in, I try to gather my composure.

When we reach the beach restaurant where the wedding shower is located, the parking lot is filling up. We’re there a little early since I’m the maid of honor and I want to see Lila. She’s waiting inside the party room, glowing in her white, flowy minidress.

“Georgia!” She squeals and runs up when she sees me. She throws her arms around me and squeezes hard. “I can’t believe I’m getting married!”

I laugh and squeeze her back. “You better believe it.”

“Adam!” She squeals his name next and throws her arms around him.

A little more of my heart melts when he hugs her back, looking genuinely happy for her and to be here with me.

Sam comes in from double doors on the opposite side the room. “The deck is ready.”

We walk out onto the deck and it’s like a fairy tale. Twinkle lights hang crisscross above the deck and mason jars with tea light candles line the railings of the deck. Stargazer lilies and tulips are grouped together to bring bursts of color and green ivy is twirled around the columns and chairs. On one side of the deck there’s the wedding table where Sam and Lila will sit with their parents.

We settled into our seats once everyone arrives. The food is brought to us on plates and on bowls, and I know this is exactly what Lila had always wanted. The glow, the flowers, the romantic atmosphere. I am so happy for my friend I almost can’t contain myself. Once we start our meal, Sam’s best man turns the picture slide on.

“Is that you?” Adam asks as a picture of me and Lila standing in front of the ocean. We’re about seven and I’m missing a front tooth. It doesn’t stop the matching toothy smiles or the fact that we’re both sunburnt red.

“Yeah.” I smile over at him. “That’s one of my favorite memories. We found sand dollars and hermit crabs and the moon was full on the beach. We stayed up all night.”

“I’m glad you had that with her.”

“Me too.” I sigh. “She’s the best.”

“Curiosity. How long have you been friends?”

“Since the womb. Our moms are best friends.” I turn my head and look at him. “Did you ever get a chance to make lifelong friends?”

He shakes his head. “No, but Brett made up for it.”

I smile. “I like that.”

Once the meal is over, the servers clear the food and tables away so that the guests can dance to the live music starting.

“Come on.” Adam grabs my hand and leads me out to the dance floor.

“Oh no, I don’t dance.” I try to pull my hand back but Adam’s already pulled me close. My objections die a hard and fast death. “Maybe I could dance.”

Adam’s gaze is full of amusement again and there’s something else there I can’t define. “Curiosity.”
