“And before you panic, Rena checked two and said they looked perfect.”

His eager, almost excited, grin hit Sloane like a shovel in the chest. Her heart gave a jolt, like an old jalopy car trying to start. Not the heart that did the physical, necessary stuff to live. The frilly rainbows and unicorn one Sloane had sworn she didn’t have.

Jed Green was cute.

And he’d brought her frozen coffee this afternoon. And stayed way late to help her out.

“Don’t get cocky.” She shook her head and hoped for an icy stare.

“How about pizza?”

“What?”

“I’ll order. What does Rena like?” He yawned again. “Assuming she’s still here. What do you like?”

Close cut blond hair. Sideburns—that clean, neat look could do her in—and blue eyes.

Broad shoulders, she reminded herself. You like broad shoulders, and Jed might have nice sideburns, but not big, brawny shoulders.

Not that she was in the market. Or interested in Jed.

“Rena’s here,” she told him.

“Nope.”

They both turned when they heard Rena’s voice. Carrying her shoes, she stopped at her office door and flipped on the light.

“You’re not here?” Sloane asked her.

“Nope. Going home. I can’t eat pizza. My stomach feels gross.”

Sloane looked back at Jed.

“Why don’t you go, too? You can walk Rena out.”

“Don’t need an escort,” Rena hollered from down the hall. Shoes back on, she clicked over the marble floor and paused at Jed’s desk. “Thanks for the offer. See you in the morning.”

Sloane watched her cross the floor and flip the locks. Purse over her shoulder, she held her keys in her hand. She tossed a look over her shoulder, sent them both a smile, and then Sloane found herself alone with Jed.

She’d been had. She and Rena had worked long, grueling hours together often. Rena loved pizza. Her stomach was made of iron, and nothing short of eating a horse smothered in siracha would make her sick. Sloane had no doubt Rena would be in bright and early, raring to go in the morning.

But she’d left now on purpose.

So Sloane could hang out and do pizza delivery with Jed Green.

“Pepperoni,” she mumbled.

Chapter Seven

Jed

“Why’d you lie on the job app?”

Jed slowed his chewing and stared at Sloane silently for a moment. Comfortable on the settee in her office, legs stretched out and crossed in front of her, she held a triangle of pepperoni pizza poised at her mouth, ready to take a bite.

“Who says I lied on the job app?”

Dumb to try and play her. He knew that. But at the moment, he was punch drunk tired and feeling a bit flirty, and maybe, she felt the same. Not flirty. He doubted one frozen coffee and one pepperoni pizza were enough to make Sloane Garrison feel flirty. But maybe…friendly. As much as Jed would like to get Sloane out of the office and sit across a real dinner table with her, maybe take her dancing, he would also be happy to come in to work tomorrow morning and have her greet him with a smile and a friendly hello.
