He turned the volume dial up and peeked at her when the seventies song, “What You Won’t Do For Love” surrounded them.

“Oh, you’re smooth,” she said with a grin. She turned sideways in her seat and nodded. “Point, Jed.”

“Hey, I’ve been listening to yacht rock for weeks now,” he promised her. “I could probably sing everything on your playlist.”

“How do you even remember what’s on it?”

“Because I wanted to remember.” He shrugged. “For you.”

Sloane dragged her gaze over his face and down over his shoulders. She studied him long enough that he wondered if he should have worn something else. He’d gone with gray flat front trousers and a white button-down. Had she expected something else? Something more formal? Should he have worn a tie?

“What?” he finally asked her. He flicked his eyes to her when she looked up at his face again. “Something on my shirt?”

“No.” She licked her lips and tipped her head. “I was just kind of wishing you would have worn the lime green bow tie.”

“Next date,” he promised.

“Really?”

“Yep.”

She nodded, apparently satisfied that he would wear the tie. Jed was just thrilled she hadn’t argued against a second date.

Boss Ever After

Ashlee Shades

Chapter 1

The First Encounter

Emily sat nervously at her desk, anxiously awaiting the arrival of her new boss. She had been working at the company for a few months now, but this was the first time she had been assigned to work directly under the new executive director. Emily had heard rumors that he was tough, strict, and had high expectations for his employees.

As she waited, Emily couldn't help but feel intimidated. She had always been a hard worker, but she worried that she wouldn't be able to meet her new boss's standards. She had heard stories of other employees who had been fired for minor mistakes, and the thought made her stomach churn. She didn’t want to have her name added to that list of talked about ex-employees who angered the director and saw themselves get the boot.

Suddenly, the door to her office opened and a tall, well-dressed man walked in. Emily's heart skipped a beat as she looked up and saw him standing there. He introduced himself as Mr. Thomas, and Emily couldn't help but notice how handsome he was. He had dark hair, a chiseled jawline, and piercing blue eyes. He exuded a confidence and authority she had only read about in her romance novels she loved, and Emily found herself feeling a bit intimidated by his presence.

"Hello, Emily, is it?" He said, his voice deep and commanding. "I'm Evan. Thomas."

"Nice to meet you, sir," Emily replied, trying to keep her voice steady.

Mr. Thomas walked over to her desk and looked over her work. Emily felt a knot form in her stomach as she watched him read through her reports and documents. She knew that he was scrutinizing every detail, looking for any mistakes or errors.

After a few minutes, and an eye squint or two, he looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. "Your work seems to be in order," he said, his voice still firm but not unkind. "But I expect nothing but the best from my employees. I hope I can count on you to meet my expectations."

It wasn’t a question. It was a command and she took it as such.

Emily nodded, feeling a mix of relief and nervousness. She knew that she had to work hard to earn Mr. Thomas's respect and trust. She also couldn't help but feel a bit intrigued by him. There was something about his confidence and intensity that drew her to him. He had a magnetism she had never felt before and it unsettled her.

As Mr. Thomas turned to leave, Emily couldn't help but steal a glance at him. She watched as he walked out of her office, his suit jacket draped over his arm and his firm muscles outlined in his fitted dress shirt, and felt a flutter in her chest. She knew that it was unprofessional to be attracted to her boss, but she couldn't deny the chemistry that she felt between them.
