“You aren’t?”

“Ever since you started working with me, I’ve wanted to get to know you. I was just too scared to ask.”

“You were afraid of me?” I repeat wondrously. “This doesn’t make sense.”

“Doesn’t make sense why I’d be intimidated by a beautiful and brilliant woman?” Something swirls behind his eyes as he scoops another bite of chocolate mousse and feeds it to me. “I can’t explain it. Just like I can’t explain why some people are drawn to specific flavors. But just like food, we know when we love them.”

His arms slide around my neck as he kisses every last bite of chocolate from my lips. And this time, I don’t hold back. I savor every bite, like a kid licking the spoon from the dessert bowl. I’m not letting any of this sweetness go to waste.

When we finally pull away, my lips tingle.

“If this is dessert, it’s the best I’ve ever had,” I admit. “I give it a five out of five.”

“The dessert or the kiss?” he says with a smirk.

“Both,” I say. “And I’d like seconds.”

“There will always be seconds,” he murmurs before touching my lips again. “I guess this means I’ll be sleeping in the bathroom tonight. No more accidental cuddling.” His boyish smile is more than I can take.

“I thought we were just pretending,” I murmur. “Or are we?”

“Do you want to keep pretending?”

I shake my head.

“I was hoping you’d say that.” He searches my eyes. “Do you know how some wines pair well with certain dishes? We’re like that. We complement each other.”

“I agree, but…” I pull back, afraid to bring up the elephant in the room. “What about after the summer when I leave for the internship?”

“Things don’t have to end between us because you’re moving. Even if you don’t work for me anymore, we can still see each other. I’ll visit, and you can do research on me. As long as it involves more of us together.” He wraps his arms around my waist, hitching me closer to his body.

“But I’m going to miss this.” I point to the food. “And this.” I brush his lips with my fingertips.

“Then it’s been decided. I’m going to cook you some amazing food and feed it to you between kisses,” he says, his mouth curving into a mischievous grin.

I laugh. “I won’t stop you from doing that. Ever.”

He kisses my forehead and holds up a glass to toast our new relationship. “To us. The perfect pairing.”

“The perfect pairing,” I say before our lips meet and we melt into another delicious kiss.
