Jarrn slams the door. “No loss there.”

“But Jarrn,” I say. “Are you sure? He’s offering everything you’ve always wanted. Go after him. Tell him whatever he needs to hear. We’ll figure us out after. It’s your only chance.”

My stomach tightens into a knot. Haven't I ruined this male's life enough? Now I've lost him the biggest opportunity of his life.

"No. There's one thing you've already taught me, Delia."

I tip my head in question.

"Wonderful things come when you least expect them."

He leans to place a sweet kiss on my cheek, then pulls out the tiny chair they delivered with the writing desk. He then thinks better of it, perhaps deciding his huge ogre frame would crush the chair into kindling.

Instead, he pulls me to the foot of the bed and we both sit as he makes a call.

“Who are you calling?” I ask.

“You weren’t the only one to visit me in the hospital, remember? Your uncle, who just so happens to work in the industry, stopped by to personally thank me for saving your mom, his sister.”

“Oh,” I breathe. “Uncle Josh?” I clap my hands, seeing where he’s going with this.

“He said if I ever need a favor to reach out. Well, I need a favor.”

Uncle Josh picks up and we chat for a few seconds before Jarrn explains what happened.

"You're lucky to be rid of him,” Uncle Josh says. “Strogoff is known as a parasite and a cheat from here to the Westlinn sector. As for Dreamscape, would you like me to do a little magic?”

“Would you, Uncle Josh?” I say, nearly crying.

“Anytime, sweetheart. You should’ve asked earlier!”

He connects us via holovid with the most beautiful opalescent-skinned Carawellian who said she'd be happy to review contracts and negotiate both initial salary and all backend compensation.

"Your timing is good," she adds. "This was set to go to production in a few weeks, but there was a problem with a few of the writers. You don't happen to know a good one, do you?" She laughs.

"It just so happens..." Jarrn points the holovid camera toward me.

At the mention of my pen name, her eyes widen. "I'm a big fan! I loved your Males of Tersian series. Let me talk to the producers, Delia. There just might be contracts in both of your futures."

By the time we finish our conversation, her uncle calls back with a time and place for Jarrn's audition. I guess that old saying about it's who you know certainly works in Starvista.

“See?” Jarrn says with a grin after we give my uncle profuse thanks and hang up. “We don’t need Strogoff.”

Always responsible, Jarrn comms his boss, Kressida, and asks her to stop by our room when she has a chance. When she arrives, I'm reminded of how bitterly jealous I was of her only a few days ago when I saw the two of them having breakfast in the dining room. So much has changed since then. I'm totally comfortable in Jarrn's love now.

"I'm so sorry," he begins shortly after he makes introductions. After he tells her about this opportunity, he ends with, "I'm sure you can understand why I have to take this chance. It would be such a big break if they hire me."

"Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed. I knew you wouldn't be with us long."

"Why is that?"

"Well," she gestures vaguely at him, "look at you. I figured you were too good to be true."

His brow furrows, clearly not following her.

"You're gorgeous, talented." She shrugs. "I knew you'd go on to bigger things as soon as an opportunity arose."

"But..." He still looks confused. "You hired me for Monsters in Review. Because I'm aMonster." He gestures pointedly to his face.
