“It? What is it?”

“You’ll see.”

Brielle didn’t move right away, still continuing to stare at him from where she stood over him. It got to the point where he couldn’t wait any longer and he launched up to grab her around her waist.

She squealed, and his laughter mingled with hers as she tumbled into his lap. Her arms draped around his neck, and her eyes locked with his. The lighthearted air that hung around them was immediately weighed down by their closeness.

Sweet floral scents wafted toward him, her perfume one of the most intoxicating scents he’d ever experienced. She was lighter than he’d expected, softer too. Her breath hitched when he reached out to brush a strand of hair from her face.

She leaned into his touch, her eyes closing. Brielle released a soft sigh as she murmured the only thing he wanted to hear her say. “Wade…”

He wanted this. More than anything, he wanted to pull her into his arms and kiss her senseless. She needed to know that this feeling he had for her wasn’t going to leave any time soon. It didn’t matter if a thousand Tads wandered in from off the street. He’d wait as long as it took because that was how much he wanted her.

But he couldn’t. Not yet. As hard as it was to resist her, he had to do it. He had to show her that she was worth more than a pretty face.

“Brielle,” he whispered, “we shouldn’t…”

Her eyes opened, and he couldn’t tell if she was merely surprised or hurt by his statement.

He swallowed hard, hating how difficult these words were for him. “I want you to know that I’m not here just to win you over.”

“You’re not?”

Slowly, he shook his head. “I need you to choose me because I make you happy. You need to choose me because you know that I will make you happier than anyone else. And right now, I don’t think you’re there yet. This is more than just an infatuation for me.”

She went stock-still. Thankfully she didn’t tear herself away from him. It almost felt like she was more curious than anything else. “You’re different.”

That wasn’t what he expected to hear. “Okay?”

Brielle pulled away from him, settling beside him with legs crossed. “It’s not a bad thing. It’s just… different.”

“Not bad…” He already regretted his decision to turn down the intimacy she’d been offering moments ago.

“No.” She pulled her legs up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. “It’s like I told you before. I feel safe with you.” A smile tugged at her lips, probably recalling the conversation they’d had before. “I trust you.”

He continued to stare at her, hoping he hadn’t made the biggest mistake of his life by insisting they take it slow. His heart thudded furiously. He wanted to kiss her so bad it felt like a stampede rising up in his chest.

There was a brief moment when he wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but then Brielle scooted close and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Definitely not bad,” she affirmed. Then she sat back, putting all her weight on her hands. “So what is about to happen?”

Wade glanced at his watch and then jumped into action. He placed a pillow behind her, ignoring the humorous look she gave him. He pointed to the pillow. “Lay down.”

“Excuse me?” The words were uttered along with her laugh. “You might want to explain what’s going on before demanding that I do any such thing.”

“Just do it,” he muttered.

“Alright, but if Tad—”

He dove onto the pillow beside her, then pointed overhead, where a wave of glitter fell across the sky.

She sucked in sharply and her hand found his. Their fingers interlocked, and she scooted closer than he thought was humanly possible. Her cheek rested against his shoulder and she murmured, “This is pretty amazing.”

His phone buzzed in his pocket, but he ignored it. Annabel had been right. This was perfect. He rested his cheek against the top of her head.

Absolutely perfect.

The phone buzzed again, ringing this time. He’d have to answer it later. Nothing was more important than what he was doing right here, right now, with Brielle. The ringing stopped then it buzzed a final time.

Good. Whoever it was got the hint.
