“You were crying a river just five minutes ago.”

“I know, I know, but hear me out,” I replied. “I went back to college so I could finally stop being a waitress or doing all these other odd jobs. The internship, it’s really something else, and I feel like I’m in my element there.” I sighed. “Now that the anger and frustration aren’t clouding my head, I feel like a weight’s been lifted off my shoulders.”

Anne smiled. “Perfect. Then just stick to the internship if it makes you happy.”

“We still need money.”

“I told you not to worry about that,” Anne scowled. “We’re fine.”

“We’re not having this discussion again.”

“Yes, we are.” Anne held both my hands and looked me in the eye. “You said this is what you want to do, and I know you. You’ll be editor-in-chief in no time. We’re going to be fine.”

“I love you for what you’re doing, Anne,” I smiled. “God knows how much I appreciate it all. But I’m not backing down about this. I’ll just have to think of something else.”

Anne bit her lip, and I sat down, watching Jimmy play with his Legos. He was growing up quickly, and with everything that had happened recently, I felt like I had completely missed out on the last year of his life. Like there was a gap in what should have been some wonderful memories.

“Hey, hold on a second,” Anne suddenly said. She grabbed her phone and disappeared into her room for what felt like an eternity. When she came back out, she had a wide smile on her face.

“Do you remember Tiffany Alexander?”

I frowned and shook my head.

“Curly blonde hair, one green, and one blue eye?”

“Right,” I remembered. “She was at your birthday party.”

“She used to be the assistant to the editor-in-chief atGent’s.”

“Wait,Gent’s?”

“The one and only.”

I felt my heart race in my chest. “Oh my God, I would die for an internship there. Do you think she can put in a good word or maybe push my CV through?”

Anne winked. “I can do you one better. She quit a few weeks ago, and they’ve been looking for a replacement since. I just called her, and she says they haven’t found anyone yet. And she’s real desperate because she needs to train the new hire before she leaves.”

“Oh, my God!”

“Want that interview?”

I clapped my hands and jumped up and down like a little girl. “Are you kidding me?”

“Is that a yes?” Anne teased.

“Yes, yes, fuck yes!”

“Mom!” Jimmy scolded.

I held back my laughter and covered my mouth. “I’m sorry, baby, so sorry.” I looked at Anne, and we both started jumping up and down in glee.

That night, I lay in bed thinking of what the future would hold for all of us. I still wasn’t sure what the job would entail, what the hours would be like, or, most importantly, what the pay would be. But, it was a step up, and even though I was going to miss the small family I had made in my internship, I knew they would be happy for me.

After all, this is where I was supposed to be going, right? Working for the editor-in-chief of a magazine likeGent’swas something that would boost my chances in this field.

For the first time in a long time, I was excited for what tomorrow would bring.

It felt like things were finally looking up.
